Where does this mom stereotype live?

I'll do it. North Arlington moms have masters degrees, wear quilted jackets and fleece vests, don't wear makeup--more of the "freshly scrubbed" look like they just got back from a hike, drive Subarus, stay home with the kids at least part-time until they return to their non-profit jobs when the kids are older, kids aren't allowed to watch TV--there may not even be a TV in the house. I'm not one of them, but I know many and they're really nice people.

Why are crunchy women (or "Freshly scrubbed" as the PC police call it) so ugly?

Me too. Except I'm not sloppy just because I'm a bit of a neat freak. My designer is usually Old Navy and my kids designers are whatever I can find at value village

I don't think they all are. I'm not one of them, but I know a few that are actually quite attractive. Maybe they got lucky and don't need a lot of make up to look good-just a healthy lifestyle

I'm with you. I'd love for someone to try and guess where I live... DH and I went to big in-state and "public Ivy" in-state school. Definitely not a big rock as DH scrimped and saved and bought it for me with cash while we were still in college. BMW for the husband and Honda SUV for myself. Loves Target. Kids are outfitted in babyGap - not Hanna Andersson or Janie and Jack. Condo - no McMansion here. No debt, no nanny and also no inheritance. Both work FT. I think we're really normal and I don't think we'd fit in with most of these posters at all... oh well.

Most (not all) definitely need make up but I have seen the really sweet and attractive ones.

I am referring to the rail thin, poor postured, gasp when you offer their child a cookie made with real sugar, neurotic women.

I must be an anamoly...though my fashion has gone down considerably since leaving NW--but I think that has more to starting to work from home full-time than it does to leaving DC. However, I would NEVER wear a quilted jacket or a fleece vest! I have nothing against TV and currently shopping for my big flat screen to mount above the fireplace.

For the record--- a lot of us that you think are SAHMS---actually work from home. There are at least 5 WAHMs on my street, though since you see us on a regular basis you'd think we were SAHMs.

But agreed---all are very friendly and not status conscious in the least bit. Very green people, that don't drive flashy cars or wear flashy clothes or carry expensive handbags even though they could afford it. It is good for the kids not to be surrounded by ostentatious displays of wealth-keeps them grounded.

Starts having children in her 20s. Likely went to a State school like JMU or Radford or VA Tech. Probably a SAH, but if she works is in human resources or residential real estate or a IT compnay. Grew up in the suburbs herself from a very middle midddle-class background(but not necessarily around DC). Most likely to drive a mini-van. Dresses fairly cute but not super stylish or up-to-date. Often fit and into aerobics. Lieks chain restaurants. Rarely ventures into "the city" and is not very well traveled on an international level. Leans to the right and some really, truly like Sarah Palin.

Hahaha... this is nearly me except I'm in PW County. State school (definitely not Radford, though), works in HR, grew up in the suburbs (but not here) in an upper-middle class background. No minivan, but SUV. I think I dress pretty cute, not a fan of most chain restaurants but do find ourselves at Red Robin for the kids. I do rarely venture into "the city" but I am pretty well-traveled on an international level.

Big difference - despise Sarah Palin and the like.

Would add: more likely to have 3+ children than other pockets of moms. Also, if not the demographic above ^^, then another strong possibility that this mom is immigrant Asian or from Middle East.

Agree with PP about Asian (most likely Indian and Pakistani) and Middle Eastern (most likely Iraqi, Turkish,

I don't agree about "more likely to have 3+ children." Lots of rich families in the most expensive parts of NWDC have 3+ children and send them all to private school. Having more than 2, and sending them all to private school, seems to have become a major status symbol amongst the upper crust in NWDC. Also, lots of Catholic upper middle class families in Montgomery County and VA have 3+ although they go to public or catholic schools (were you get a tuition discount for each additional kid).

This is so off. I live on a side street of Rockwood Pky (Spring Valley), went to a top 10 liberal arts college, drive a 10 yr old Mercedes station wagon, don't shop new money designer stores (it looks tacky when people can see your label), and even though I have a nanny I stay at home and raise my kids. I've never been to OBX, we tend to summer further up north and I'm pretty much par for the course in my social circle.

These families with leased Range Rovers and no money in the bank at the end of the month or no trust funds for their kids and thus will have to apply for financial aid or send them to a large state school are comical.
