How do you know they are the top 5% of their college class?

Worth if for the schools. They all use the WL to stack the oos $ once their in state numbers are covered.

There is an award for freshman in the top 5%. I doubt I'll know in subsequent years.

My 2025 oos UM grad made $80k this year and wasn’t in business or engineering, if that’s the criteria we’re going by.

+1 My 2025 OOS UM grad made $85K, LSA Econ.

No, it isn't. OOS COA for UNC is $59,229 to $88,470 (the latter figure includes travel, health insurance, and other costs). It's right there on the UNC. Penn State is $60,000 to $65,000. VT is $67,418+.

Trade-school mindset.

How's your humanities degree?

Awesome, actually. As a successful attorney who loves their job, can’t complain.

I'm a successful attorney as well and so glad my kid decided to go to a top engineering school and not study humanities or be a lawyer. So happy the kid had the math and science aptitude.

Same, successfull attorney who has told my kids to avoid law school for many reasons. Quality of life and they are very sharp with math, but still in high school.

About to do OOS UMich so I’ll let you know. Chose it because the programs are so very highly ranked and (so far) starting salaries after graduation in the chosen majors are close to or above 100k. Do your research & make sure the job/salary is likely before you decide. Get AI to run a comparison—it’s not just tuition it’s what the difference could have been if invested for four years instead, etc., etc.. And if DC changes majors midstream that will affect calculations as well.

Also look at value of alumni connections

UMD is not in the same league as Mich.
Mich OOS over Uva instate depending on field is debatable
Mich over UMD wins every time

UMD is quite literally in the same league as UM.

No, it's not. Michigan is rated as no 3 top public in the nation. UMD is rated 16.

The PP was using “quite literally” quite literally. They meant both schools are in the Big Ten. It’s a joke.

Duke and Stanford are in same league as FSU and NC state just to name a few but if you tried to say they are in same league I’d ask to clarify if sports or academics etc.

Yes and no. That and making fun of people who think that colleges can be ranked, the USNWR is the best way to do that, and that some notion of prestige is more important than accomplishment.
