I think Um = Mich per OP's title thread. |
| tag helps a a lot at the Vtech rate but maybe not Umich rate |
Yes knew that was making a point thanks |

I have an OOS kid at one of these schools, full-pay. I have another kid at a smaller, highly selective private school. And I truly don’t understand what people mean by “worth it.”
Is this about post-graduation salary? Class size? Reputation? Research opportunities? Personal attention? Happiness? Both schools are “worth it” to us because they’re the schools our kids wanted to go to, where they thought they’d be happy and challenged. |
So use your state flagship, which is there for a reason. Or send your kids to CrapU and they can ask this same question a generation from now. |
+1 Depends on your kids' other options, their prospects for being employed upon graduation, your wealth etc. If your kid has in-state tuition at a good public, maybe not. If your kid's other option is U. Michigan full pay vs Northeastern or full pay, I'd pick Michigan. |
Exactly. I’ve been raising this kid for 18 years and they’ve been a cost center the whole time. I’m not going to suddenly start being a hardass about short-term ROI. Would I go into debt for an OOS state school? No, but I also wouldn’t go into debt for a private school. YMMV. |
Consider UF in Gainesville. Tuition is cheap and they give merit aid too and top 30 school |
| In my opinion, if Engineering/Tech then UCB and UM are well worth it. You didn't mention Georgia Tech but the same applies there as well. Otherwise, probably not. I honestly can't think of any program at UNC worth paying out of state for. |
Trade-school mindset. |
| OOS public school is never worth it. You are paying to subsidize in-state tuition. |
Ridiculous statement. These publics are superior to 99% of privates. |
There are at least 10 - 15 other schools as good or better than any T10 for a particular major. If you are hunting for IB/MBB then some of them are worth it and some of them fall behind the top SLACs. Otherwise ROI is a poor metric. |
There is nothing at UCB that is worth the mess of a UCB undergraduate experience. If you can get into UCB and want to do CS you can go to SJSU or Santa Clara and get all of the same opportunities for less money and angst. |
Equally true that private school is never worth it. You are paying to subsidize tuition for poor and middle-class students. |
