Worried about my son being drafted

However, I could see incentives for domestic manufacturing of weapons systems.

Can you tell me what this is? Honest question.

You spend your time on the internet on DCUM to keep your sanity?

Yes..I just avoid politics & current events completely.

How privileged of you to have the luxury not to engage.

DP here but you’ve heard of the Tomahawks and Patriot systems being used? I’m assuming the PP is referring, in part, to those.

The manufacture of those items requires a whole US manufacturing ecosystem.

Ah, ok. I have heard of them in the sense that the news is reporting that we are using then in the current war, but I have no idea about the specifics. Why would they need to draft people when they can just pay civilians to make them?

I don’t think the PP was suggesting a draft would be involved. Instead of using a draft to increase military headcount, financial incentives would be used to boost domestic production.

1) it would grow him a spine
2) you unfortunately couldn’t be drafted with him so maybe he could Learn to advocate
3) it would launch him into a career - only 1:3 jobs in the military are actually offensive / weapons system related so he could instead pursue medical, administrative or dozens of other enlisted personnel categories that would never see active combat

Your fear of being drafted has reduced your family’s plight to that which was so eloquently described by Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men.

He'll be fine, even if he is drafted. The military is a fine place where you men and women can grow and become leaders & global thinkers.

Oh please. When was the last time we had a president who served in the military? The 80s had George Bush Sr who served. Clinton, Bush Jr and Trump were draft dodgers. Obama came of age after Vietnam was over. Biden never served.

Bush Jr served. CBS fired Dan Rather for false reporting about Bush Jr.

Biden had a son who served.

Bush Jr served in the National Guard, guaranteed not to be sent to Vietnam. His father pulled some strings to get him in.

This was probably the case in the 70s too, it was just undocumented.

My anxious kid with adhd would be an absolute nightmare in the military. He cant follow directions or pay attention to time or remember what i told him 5 minutes ago. Also needs lots of encouragement and positive talk or he spirals. Good luck winning a war with that!

They won’t be turning away kids on the spectrum because most don’t have any kind of limitations. And quite a few are made up.

OP, do you have clinical anxiety?

Seriously. If you think your kid might be drafted you are either clinically anxious or have no idea how wars are fought or anything about the military

I was PP and yes, that is an accurate summary of my stance. You don't need as many boots on the ground when you are sending in missiles and drones. But you need people to make that stuff.

Get him an ADHD diagnosis- extra time on college tests and the meds will make him ineligible for a draft. Yay for you.

ASD is also considered a disqualifying condition. You can potentially get a medical waiver on a case by case basis and many people do. And obviously the military could change its criteria. But you can’t just be quirky and say you have ASD, if that’s the goal. It would need documentation.

It’s easy to get documentation. The symptoms are so vague, no eye contact, awkward socially, doesn’t like loud sounds or certain textures, focuses on one thing. The cases so mild that the kid goes to regular school, college and a job should not be included in any waivers.

There will never again be a draft in the US for lots of reasons, not least because only 25 percent of American 18 year olds today are even fit enough - both physically and mentally - to serve. Young Americans are in a sad state.

If there is a draft it means that we are losing very badly somewhere and you should already have fled to Canada or Mexico.

They drafted overweight and men with mental or physical health problems for Vietnam. 50,000 soldiers were killed. They drafted about 2 million men but only about 1/3 went to the jungles to fight.

Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara was concerned they wouldn’t have enough soldiers at the height of the war so they created a program which someone named “McNamara’s Morons”. They called back men who were first rejected and this time they were drafted with the lower standards.

The overweight men went to boot camp, ate mushy food and lost weight . Men who were originally rejected for “mental deficiency” were called back and drafted. Most had IQs in the intellectual disability range, under 75. These men were the ones most likely to be sent to the front line of combat.

If America had a draft with the current ruthless administration there would be very few exemptions. Israel is sending boots on the ground to Lebanon. It won’t be long until Netanyahu sidles up to Trump, tells him how great he is and asks for some American troops.
