Worried about my son being drafted

They should absolutely institute a draft. Start with Barron Trump.

From Iowa. Wasn't a national guardsman from Iowa killed in something else recently?

1) it would grow him a spine
2) you unfortunately couldn’t be drafted with him so maybe he could Learn to advocate
3) it would launch him into a career - only 1:3 jobs in the military are actually offensive / weapons system related so he could instead pursue medical, administrative or dozens of other enlisted personnel categories that would never see active combat

Your fear of being drafted has reduced your family’s plight to that which was so eloquently described by Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men.

He'll be fine, even if he is drafted. The military is a fine place where you men and women can grow and become leaders & global thinkers.

Where did your children enlist?

I don’t know. My dad’s whole family served in WW2 including at things llle the battle of the bulge. But during Vietnam’s he said he’d take my brother to Canada if his draft number came up. It’s one thing to sign up for war that important to protect our allies and democracy. It’s another to sign up for a war with no clear goals, that we initiated, and where the leadership doesn’t appear to know how to lead.

Exactly. Six Americans died since we struck Iran a few days ago. The military isn't perfectly safe and this isn't a war we need good men for.

Unfortunately I have no dual citizenship but my husband does. I've been bugging him to get our sons on the register of foreign births in that country so they would have it too. He doesn't seem to feel the urgency I do about this, but I want the three of them to be able to leave on a dime to keep my kids safe. I don't want them to die or kill for some old man's ego.

You do know that one of the six was a woman, right?

Americans have a very strong opposition to conscription because of the Vietnam War. A draft is very, very improbable here. And rather improbable in France too... but still, being a dual citizen, total odds are minuscule but non-negligible. For your son, OP, I think they're pretty negligible.

I have hundreds of items on my Worry List, and this is not one of them.

Dual citizens cannot get drafted in the US.

PP you replied to. I do not assume that previous rules apply. This administration has broken many rules.

Where did your children enlist?

Let's have Barron go first. Followed by the children of Republicans in Congress who support this war.

We'll never see a draft again.

Poverty is a driving force in enlistment. As long as the deck is stacked against poor people, the military recruiters will meet their quotas.

You know the high schools are required to let the military recruiters to attend all the career & colleges fairs, right?

I have two sons. Not worried about a draft. Worry about something else, OP. There are plenty of worry options!

There won’t be a draft. There will never be another large scale ground war.

I feel that people who are adamant that there will never be another draft mean well but are stating that from a place of fear and anxiety, rather than knowledge. As in, they are scared to admit that this is a possibility. Unless they outlaw the draft process, which they never will, there is always a possibility that our kids might be drafted. Trump and Hegseth are morons starting wars they have no business starting, without an objective or a plan. Russia and China are most certainly watching Trump snub NATO, the UN and every other organization that ensured peace post WW2. We increasingly don't have any capable allies in the world. Who do you think is going to fight on behalf of the US?

So true...

My father who served in WWII felt similarly.

Push your DH to do it. DH is from the UK and got our kids UK passports as soon as they were born. He gets them renews every year. We have a DS who is draft age.
