Why are so many of my friends not discussing politics (at least by text or email)? I’m in a few group friend chats and

I have a friend who wanted to sen me every news article. I asked him to stop and he asked if I was MAGA.

Maybe, OP, you can respect people are capable of finding the news and/or do not want to have recorded conversations.

MAGA always here with nothing meaningful to add They know they are useless and meaningless so they throw in some insults to make their thoughts seem deep.

Ummm what?! Op asked why people aren't talking about what's going on in our country. No one said anything about articles being sent and as far as "recorded conversations" are you scared that you no longer have the freedom of speech-are you concerned that they are going after and trying to silence the press . If you are then OP made their point-this is alarming and the time to be coming together. We should all be talking about it before it's too late. Maybe you can respect that true Americans do not take kindly to an administration who is using the Hitler playbook to strip away freedoms and rights that many fought hard for=some paid the ultimate price with their lives protecting you freedom.

Sounds like OP needs to take a deep breath and go for a walk in the woods.

Sounds like you need to pull your head out of the sand.

“Uncertainty is a very important factor, and, instead of decreasing as time goes on, it grows. Outside, in the streets, in the general community, ‘everyone’ is happy. One hears no protest, and certainly sees none. You know, in France or Italy there would be slogans against the government painted on walls and fences; in Germany, outside the great cities, perhaps, there is not even this. In the university community, in your own community, you speak privately to your colleagues, some of whom certainly feel as you do; but what do they say? They say, ‘It’s not so bad’ or ‘You’re seeing things’ or ‘You’re an alarmist.’

And you are an alarmist. You are saying that this must lead to this, and you can’t prove it. These are the beginnings, yes; but how do you know for sure when you don’t know the end, and how do you know, or even surmise, the end? On the one hand, your enemies, the law, the regime, the Party, intimidate you. On the other, your colleagues pooh-pooh you as pessimistic or even neurotic. You are left with your close friends, who are, naturally, people who have always thought as you have.”

If your entire life revolves around politics, that’s sad. What a lousy, lonely, life.

Very few people are rational thinkers these days if they align themselves with a major party. They are puppets. The DNC and RNC profit off the divisions in this country. We are governed by the worst aspects of the two major parties. This is not sustainable.

Stalin may have been a little less bad than Hitler, but he was still super bad.

I do but I’m an immigrant and so are my friends.

I am not an immigrant and I do too.

We voted, we're doing what we can now, but life continues. I'm still expected at work every day. The kids still have to go to school. Life marches on.

Also, it's depressing as heck. Sometimes we need to focus on something else for a minute.

+1000. It is so unspeakably awful that I have stopped engaging about it. It does no good. I vote, I donate to worthy causes, I teach my kids to be kind and have good values. But I am trying very hard to protect my sanity and peace by intentionally not talking about it to the extent possible.

Honestly OP, you sound kind of obsessed and potentially unbalanced.

Most people - normal people - don’t want to have politics injected into every subject they discuss, even if they tend to agree. But discussions of kid’s sports, recipes, or pets don’t all need to devolve into rants about how much you hate Trump. There’s just no need for this.

It’s …….. boring.

Thank you

And I think it might be because several of them are MAGA or MAGA sympathetic

Or they just have more nuanced opinions. Like, asylum is abused, only ppl with legal status should be in the US, but they don’t support the cruelty, chaos and blatant disregard for due process.
But they know you’ll go rabid and yell maga at them

You call that a “nuanced opinion”? I call that a Democrat. Plenty of democrats believe exactly what you wrote. I have no problems with people who believe as you do, and vote democrat. I’ve got a lot of problems with people who purport to believe as you do, but vote republican.

I am a journalist so cannot be very out there with my opinions. I work for a leans right / Libertarian news operation but the higher ups depise Trump.

I talk with close friends about the situation. Unfortunately, it is going to have to get really bad before we correct course. Trump voters have to personally suffer enough to want to end the nonsense.

This is the fundamental character flaw in play. One-dimensional people have nothing to fall back on if they depend on a singular focus for self-validation and positive reinforcement.
