Why are so many of my friends not discussing politics (at least by text or email)? I’m in a few group friend chats and

The people who want to discuss have done nothing but insult those who choose not to engage. You are no different then my fox loving mother who has tried to bully me multiple times into engaging with her on politics.

+1. This forum - which I enjoyed much more during the first Trump presidency - is just not fun anymore because there is no longer any nuance of discussion. The conversations are shouted down with screams of MAGA any time any poster says something 100% not far left.

I only discuss politics with a few friends who I know have views most aligned with mine or have open minds.

I dont discuss politics with my conservative friends and my friends who are more n the far left, I can’t talk to them either about politics.

Same experience here. The screaming of “MAGA” at anyone who doesn’t 100% agree with them has become such a trope. I report those posters.

There is no longer nuance in politics, sweetie. If you are still trying to “both sides” what is going on right now, you are all in on fascism.

The lack of self-awareness on this thread is comical. You people are caricatures.

People with no sense of decorum and/or who are delusional enough to think that everyone agrees with them are the only ones who bring up politics and religion. They suck the air out of everyone room they enter, including virtually.
More like there are a lot of low information people out there. Telling them something they don't know, makes them feel stupid. The more important the fact they don't know is, the stupider they feel for not knowing it.

Does that inspire them to become more informed? No - instead they bury their heads deeper and get mad at you for making them feel stupid.

Decorum = not making people feel stupid

This country is doomed because anti-intellectual culture has seeped through and through. People would rather watch a tik-tok of a pretty face teaching them how to wick a candle than read a newspaper.

Thank you

And I think it might be because several of them are MAGA or MAGA sympathetic

Or they just have more nuanced opinions. Like, asylum is abused, only ppl with legal status should be in the US, but they don’t support the cruelty, chaos and blatant disregard for due process.
But they know you’ll go rabid and yell maga at them

You call that a “nuanced opinion”? I call that a Democrat. Plenty of democrats believe exactly what you wrote. I have no problems with people who believe as you do, and vote democrat. I’ve got a lot of problems with people who purport to believe as you do, but vote republican.

PP you replied to. Many of my democratic friends can’t stand any criticism of the immigration system or certain types of immigrants. I am an immigrant myself so I’m not as naive and I see a lot of my compatriots abusing the system in many ways. But god forbid you say something, like maybe most or at least some of the Somalian fraud was exactly that?

How were you personally involved with or victimized by the alleged Somali fraud?

Oh, you mean you just heard about it on Fox News and are dutifully outraged?

DP. Wait - you think Fox News is the only one reporting on the Somali fraud? Get a clue and try leaving your echo chamber occasionally.

Sorry. You care about it because the New York Times told you to. Feel better?

Seek help. And try to figure out what DP means.

And once again, proving the point that you actually think people are unintelligent and uninformed if they choose not to engage with you. You’re clearly the smartest in all the land and only you know what’s best for the rest of us!
Honestly, I’ve been reading your garbage since well before 2016 and it really is no wonder Trump was elected. Thanks for driving so many normal, sane voters away with your pathetic superiority complex. JFC.

I wrote the PP about low information people, and I'm not the PP you were arguing with further upthread. Sorry for the confusion.

You and everyone else on this thread are not low information people. Most people are though. I don't feel superior to them because many of them are much more successful than me in many ways.

But it answers OP's question. They don't care to know anything beyond the headlines. Unfortunately we now live in a world new world, where our little bubbles are surrounded by lies and half truths. And that's the US electorate, sadly.

Spot on! People who just assume their friends and family are against human trafficking and extrajudicial executions in the middle of the street simply lack decorum.

Glad you have your priorities straight.

This.

Can you talk about politics at a work party if it’s raided by ICE and your colleagues are kidnapped? Or would that be rude?

I mean that’s how I feel about folks assuming anyone who is anti-Trump is a “leftist.” Goes both ways.

That would mean the company is hiring illegally and violating the law

If you’ve been a DCUM politics forum devoted for a couple of years, you’ll know how the narrative of MAGA = low information evolved:

1. You make a statement of fact
2. MAGA makes a demand for a receipt
3. You, or another poster, provides one or more receipts
4. MAGA then changes the goal posts (what about X?)
5. You point this out
6. MAGA calls you an idiot or smug, out-of-touch elitist.

I would post my receipts for this claim here, but see above points 4-6. I’m no longer wasting my time.
