Are we like people in the Weimar Republic who went about their daily lives as their country was taken over by nazis?

Some people care about politics, some (most) don’t.

Some people discuss politics regularly with others, most don’t.

I enjoy discussing politics, but would never do so via text or in a group chat. Impossible to have meaningful discussion via text & too much risk of missed nuance.

And group format exponentially increases risk of miscommunication and lowers odds of meaningful discussion.

If you don’t understand these things, you’re probably not well positioned to draw conclusions.

Thank you

And I think it might be because several of them are MAGA or MAGA sympathetic

Well I might know the typical cadence of group chatter with my friends more than you. And we use it like conversation. You sound old.

The sad part is this is probably not true. They are probably democrats but they just don’t care enough. That’s the problem.

I think you are spending time with the wrong people. I have a daily group chat with high school friends and it is 90% political since Trump. My group chat with sons is mostly "what did Dementia Don say today?" I have a small chat with a few neighborhood friends where we share political news, jokes, protest info. Politics are part of most of my conversations!

And you like a naïf.

Wish you luck in your voyage of discovery.

Like clockwork. If you can’t stop them or get them to give up, try to find another way to defuse the truth bomb.

I do but I’m an immigrant and so are my friends.

I vote Democrat and I am as appalled by total discrediting of law and order as you are, but I avoid discussing it because nuance is impossible.
They’ve discredited the idea of “being in the U.S. is a privilege not a right” and any such sentiment is taken as Natalee by rabid people who don’t understand nuance.

Or they just have more nuanced opinions. Like, asylum is abused, only ppl with legal status should be in the US, but they don’t support the cruelty, chaos and blatant disregard for due process.
But they know you’ll go rabid and yell maga at them

I avoid politics because it is too stressful right now and there is nothing I can do about it anyway. We no longer have a balance of power that I can rely on, and it appears Trump is planning to steal (or intimidate) the vote this October or in 2028. Kvetching about something I have no control over does not bring me joy.
