Instructions say to turn the heat down to 65 at night. The instructions acknowledge that the house is set on 45 when not in use.

Everyone was freezing cold for hours and I couldn’t bathe my kids after a long day of travel.

Is this acceptable?

No but you booked an Air B&B that is on you.
Who still does this?

In a lot of places this is the only option unless you want everyone in one hotel room.

No one is stopping you from getting two or three hotel rooms. This is what we do.

Well it’s illegal to have young kids in non connecting rooms, which most hotels don’t have. So technically the law is stopping me from putting my kids in their own room. There aren’t any chain hotels where I’m currently visiting.

Did you complain, OP?

45 degrees is really unacceptable. Honestly, the owners should not be in the AirBnB business.

Yes. But clearly you don’t think so.

This is Another reason we never use AirBnB.

I’d rather not go. I’m having sex on vacation not sleeping in the same room as four year olds.

I've had this happen. It took a while to even figure out how to turn the heat up. I didn't complain or even think to.

I also had this happen at a ski cabin we rented one winter. It frankly didn’t occur to me to complain.

I just thought, oh well, and we dressed warmly for a few hours while it heated up….

It wouldn’t have bothered me as much if I didn’t have tired young kids to bathe and put to bed, and if I weren’t paying close to $6k for the week.

OP, I agree with your assessment and am sorry this happened but I did have one question. Wouldn't running a hot bath been a perfect antidote for the cold temp? If you close the door of the bathroom, run a steaming hot shower to heat up the bathroom air temp and then run the bath for your kiddos, that may have been an option. Another poster suggested running blankets and towels in the dryer to dry the kiddos off and help make a warm bed.

But yes, all this is besides the point that the house was too cold upon arrival.

Please let us know what Airbnb or the hosts did and hopefully you got refunded some money.

I recently researched this in advance of a winter time vacation and 45 is actually not fine.

Lots and lots of people. Your ignorance is not a good look.

It depends on the placement/insulation of pipes and if the 45 degree air can reach them etc. But it's a potentially expensive experiment. Very few people would have a valid reason to go as low as 45 with the potential for a plumbing and flooding disaster.

But 45 for a rental unit that should be ready at check-in is 100% not fine. As a frame of reference, NYC mandates that dwellings be at least 68 from 6am-10pm and 62 overnight.

I had the same in my situation…expensive cabin and several little kids. It sucked at the time but I forgot it even happened until this post.
