Hey remember when the DC council, led by JLG, passed legislation in 2022 that reduced penalties for crimes like carjacking, robberies and murder? Even though we were in the middle of a crime wave? And when Bowser vetoed the legislation because it was so criminal friendly, then the city council overrode her? And remember how the legislation was so embarrassing to Democrats that President Biden and Democrats in Congress stepped in and overturned JLG's legislation?

Comrade, I have no recollection of these events and neither do you.

Allow me to refresh your memory, including when JLG said it was racist for Biden and congressional Democrats to overturn her law easing criminal penalties for murder:

Remind me which branch of government drafts the annual budget?

The budget for Washington, D.C. is drafted by the Mayor, who submits the proposed budget to the Council of the District of Columbia. The Council then reviews, holds hearings, and may modify the budget before approving it.

Bowser is a weak mayor. Always has been. DC is run by the city council.

I was just correcting the poster that seems to believe the council members have no control over the budget.

Right, so the Council drafts the DC budget.

The poster who responded to all the posts about JLG’s horrendous record on crime by blithely dismissing it all with comments “the council has nothing to do with law and order” (completely wrong, by the way) gives me such a sinking feeling. We’re doomed.

In my experience JLG has provided excellent consistent services. Better than I’ve received with other CMs for sure.

I think she’s made a good mark legislatively. More impressive than McDuffie on that front. I mean ideology wise it really just comes down to do you want a moderate or more of a leftist?

She took a dig at how Bowser handled recent dealings with Trump, and I think Bowser did a fine job, what else was she supposed to do? I don’t think JLG can improve over Bowser on that.

I do think folks on the left active in DC politics are energized by Mamdani’s win and see JLG as the next Mamdani, and while I think policy wise she’s probably well aligned with him I’m not sure her campaign will unfold that way, the political landscape is just too different here.

I do think she has a good chance of winning but it’ll be close. I think we can just about predict the outcome, with McDuffie having a strong showing in Wards 3,7,8 and Janeese carrying wards 1 and 4, with 2,5,6 being more of a toss up, though perhaps 5 goes McDuffie.

JLG doesn’t have the political ability to handle DC, with its interactions with Trump and Congress. We also have an extremely shallow bench when it comes to good politicians. Which means JLG will probably be mayor unless some interesting person suddenly steps in to ring. And if JLG is mayor we are getting taken over again.

This is all true.

What exactly are you insinuating with this remark? Please, explain. We'll wait.

Has there ever been a DC mayor who worked in the private sector before running for office?

I’m a JLG fan but agree. The way they handled crime bills early on really bad. She’s no Mamdani she does not have the deft and skills.

i wish Henderson would run. I don’t know if she’s any better, but I think she could thread the needle between the business guy and JLG.

JLG is an inflexible, unlikeable ideologue who is bad with people and incapable of compromise. She would be a disaster as mayor.

What's wrong with having a business guy as mayor. People forget that businesses pay a lot of money in taxes. I employ a lot of people here. We could just as easily move to VA or MD and it would be much cheaper. I also live in the city. I want great city services. It should be really easy to open businesses here. It's not. It's really hard. Why are we so business unfriendly?

I know people complained when the city stopped rental assistance and the moratorium on people not paying rent. Well, most of the folks who own rental houses and small apartment buildings need you to get out if you can't pay. I'm sorry but personally, I need to pay my mortgage. We can't help everyone. We don't have the money.

I used to run the DC school buses. Trust me when I tell you, there are a lot of trifling people and parents in this city.

I'm sure there are some good hearted business people that would do just fine, but we've had too much of the "business community" getting their way through less than ethical means to the detriment of residents. Cue Jack Evans.

I'm not a fan of JLG as she has done nothing to improve her own Ward one that I have lived in for my entire life.

With that being said, why is Trump a measure or factor into ones ability to lead the city? It's nothing anyone could possibly do to go against him so I see this as a non factor.
