That's what is happening and I know of other contractors dealing with the same issue. Consider yourself very fortunate if this is not something you worry about right now. But let's be clear, it will start to impact all of us. Clearly it is already impacting OP.

In the mean time, set up a phone call with the contractor and ask him what he can do for you. If he can't do the job, start looking for a new contractor. Yes, it will be hard but it is what it is. Then pay for the work you did have done.

bull shit, i have a bunch of work ongoing through out the dc area, this contractor is giving excuses and if they are in fact reliant on ICE risk workers they need to be arrested and fined

OP should report that business to DOJ.

It’s not crazy to suspend your activities in DC because you don’t want to run the risk of your workers spending one minute in ICE detention.

Please don't use the racial slur Latino. Hispanic is preferrable for a blanket term. Or Mexican or Peruvian or Cuban, etc.

Gosh who knew? Obviously not all the biggest Latino advocacy orgs. Look up the language used by UnidosUS, LULAC, VotoLatino (those bastards! it’s in their *name*!)

Latino is more inclusive as it includes people of South American backgrounds like Brazilians.

Human is even more inclusive you racist.

I know construction workers who refuse to come into DC even though they are all here legally. People are getting taken by ICE just for "looking" illegal. It's a legitimate fear.

Do those Hispanic MAGAs have fear of being swept up? They should.

Nope. The border problem and Hispanics are exactly why Trump won.

Gee so NEGRO is acceptable now, since after all the NAACP has it in it's name?

You are just a racist. Accept it.

I challenge you to find the word "negro" anywhere on the NAACP website. And no, it's not in the name. It stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, though they have rebranded to drop the component words and they only use the now-former acronym for their brand. Pretty common with the older civil rights and advocacy groups.

Now head to the website of ANY Latino advocacy organization. Or maybe don't, because of how offended you will be at all those people saying latino latino latino over and over, on every page.

Since we're all in a learning mood, you might be interested to know that this is regional. Latino is the preferred blanket term here in the east. But folks of latine ancestry on the west coast often prefer Chicano. There, now you're a teeny bit smarter than you were. Hope it helps.

JAJAJA You are so out of touch boomer.

My friend hasn't been able to get her leaking roof in Columbia Heights replaced for over a month now. I talked to a contractor at my mom's and he said they only did the outdoor job because they've worked with her for decades and it's in the back of a house with a driveway to hide their truck. His cousin who lives in DC has been picked up repeatedly and threatened despite being here legally. People are swapping tips on WhatsApp about safe roads and areas like their life depends on it, because it does. Do you not get it? It doesn't matter if you have papers, they are taking people who are brown and speak Spanish. People are reacting accordingly.

Nobody cares about your lame politics. This is a non issue outside of DC. Had my roof replaced in Northern VA in about 2 weeks, no problema. This is the way it goes if you are here illegally.

Of course the problem of workers not being willing to come into DC, because Trump has specifically directed ICE to go into DC, isn’t something that will affect you in VA.

Except this isn't what most people are experiencing in DC right now. This company is giving OP the run around.

The Dept of Labor in my state checks Roofing Payrolls pretty closely to make sure workers are paid legally. One long time local roofing company was fined 4 million dollars for not paying workers comp to his roofing crew. He did a year in prison.

The roofers that use illegals and pay them a cash pittance have an unfair trade adantage in bidding.

This guy quoted $12,000 less than the other four roofers I had quotes from to reroof my house. After I googled his name I found out why.

This guy was also driving to the Rio Grande to pick up workers and bring them back to our state.

The reality is there are some crooked contractors out there.

Okay. But ICE is racially profiling people and regularly detaining citizens and people who have legal residence here.

the only people at risk for not showing up are the undocumnted if they are truly not going on site. Getting paid is outweighed with minor inconvience , if they are truly afraid of getting deported they shouldn't be working to begin with and believe running away is more important than getting paid.

This is so sad. I’m embarrassed for my country. Immigrants are so hardworking. America is going down the drain without them. Watch all the MAGA mansions fall apart in 3…2…1… and boom, no one to fix them.

I know you won't read that article, but FL businesses (construction, farms) have suffered after FL passed stringent immigration rules.

Good. They deserve to suffer if they were exploiting illegals like that.
