Roofer didn't finish job because of ICE

“Latino” is not a racial slur

I haven't read this entire thread but yes this is legitimately a worry for many Latinos working in the construction field. I know construction workers who refuse to come into DC even though they are all here legally. People are getting taken by ICE just for "looking" illegal. It's a legitimate fear.

+1 Company that you says has good reviews bails on your job despite the contract. You could take them to court but that's expensive, and they're betting that you won't. Whether the company owner is lying to you about ICE is irrelevant to your issue. The company does not value your business, and even if you write a negative review online, that will not change their views, because likely your job is not sufficiently lucrative in this tough labor environment.

So get as much of your money back and find another contractor.

It’s not crazy to suspend your activities in DC because you don’t want to run the risk of your workers spending one minute in ICE detention.

Please don't use the racial slur Latino. Hispanic is preferrable for a blanket term. Or Mexican or Peruvian or Cuban, etc.

Gosh who knew? Obviously not all the biggest Latino advocacy orgs. Look up the language used by UnidosUS, LULAC, VotoLatino (those bastards! it’s in their *name*!)

Contractor is not lying. My cleaning company has stopped coming to DC, the construction site at the end of my block is abandoned, and several local restaurants have “temporarily” closed or reduced hours.

What did Rs *think* was going to happen when huge sectors of our economy were booming on the back of cheap, unprotected labor?

Latino is more inclusive as it includes people of South American backgrounds like Brazilians.

sounds like a bad excuse for failure to deliver and if they are using illegal migrants you should report them and get all your money back

I’m not sure if you’re a troll or an idiot but Latino is not a slur.

Could you afford to be yanked out of your office/job site and held indefinitely and maybe shipped to some random country? That's what is happening and I know of other contractors dealing with the same issue. Consider yourself very fortunate if this is not something you worry about right now. But let's be clear, it will start to impact all of us. Clearly it is already impacting OP.

In the mean time, set up a phone call with the contractor and ask him what he can do for you. If he can't do the job, start looking for a new contractor. Yes, it will be hard but it is what it is. Then pay for the work you did have done.

bull shit, i have a bunch of work ongoing through out the dc area, this contractor is giving excuses and if they are in fact reliant on ICE risk workers they need to be arrested and fined

Pretend you’re another customer and call and ask about siding replacement.l and other tasks. Mention you are in Dc. See if they stick to their story.

They need to be rounded up and given harsher penalties than the illegals themselves, as they are the real problem.

Yes, let's arrest Trump for hiring undocumented workers for decades!

As for the issue of workers we interviewed 5 companies and this one came with good references (and was middle of the pack as far as price).

I think the excuse is BS but not sure if there is any recourse and don’t want to go through the process of vetting a company to do siding again.

Do you live under a rock?

He’s telling the truth you are an idiot

the only idiot is hiring illegal workers, i would get your deposit back and threaten litigation and to give the documentation that he says ice risk workers to ice for closer review of his company.

It is if people are offended by it. It's certainly derogatory to most. You are just out of touch.
