Managers sre avoiding hiring recent college grads

Anonymous
If you care about your children and your neighbors children you will help stop the h1b and opt job replacement visas

I expect this Congress to introduce and pass a bill to limit H-1B visas to a small number of critical-need talents. If you do not act, the program will continue to drive Americans out of these fields.

It’s not just H1B’s it is international students on a visa can stay in the US after graduating from college with an F-1 student visa.

After graduating, F-1 students are eligible to apply for an Optional Practical Training (OPT) permit which allows them to stay and work in the U.S. for one year and extend it for another two years if their field of study is related to science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).

There is an incentive to hire these international students because Employers save around 8 percent when they hire foreign students or graduates instead
of U.S. workers because they don't have to pay FICA or Medicare taxes under the
Optional Practical Training program (OPT). They also can keep salaries artificially low because they know many international students will work at a wage that is higher than they would get in their home countries but much lower than what Americans will accept.

If you care about your children, you will start disciplining them so that they don't think they are the center of the Universe. You'll start making them read books and build things instead of playing games on their phones. You'll not helicopter their every interaction with authority. Then maybe hiring managers will actually want to hire US born workers rather than foreign workers.

Universities provide education, not home training. When I was a young adult, I certainly made some errors as a new professional, but no one has to tell me that I can't wear the same dress to the office that I wore to the club on Saturday. No one had to teach me how to show up on time. No one had to teach me how to answer the phone like an adult or to at least appear busy out of respect for my job and my boss. My mother made sure I knew these things before sending me off to college. Why are kids not receiving any life skills education at home anymore?

Because their parents are working, sometimes multiple jobs, and trying to juggle the realities of the world as it is now. I got "how to answer the phone" training because we had a family landline phone (and answering machine) growing up. My kids don't answer my cell phone and we haven't had a landline since before the youngest was born. Different technology, different times.

"Home training" is a full-time job. Who is supposed to do that work when both parents need to have paying full-time jobs to make ends meet? Wages have stagnated, cost of living continues to skyrocket, and parenting doesn't pay. Who is supposed to be doing that "home training" labor, and when, and with what time and resources?

You made a choice to have kids. It's your job to make sure they are prepared for life. That means taking the time to teach them basic life skills even if requires a little extra effort than it used to.

Everything you said is true, but that doesn't mean you just...don't prepare your kids for adulthood.

"The class of 2025 college graduates is entering a difficult job market. Not only is there economic uncertainty, but hiring managers also express skepticism about the capabilities and professionalism of young workers joining the workforce.

Resume.org surveyed 1,000 hiring managers in April to understand how they feel about hiring recent college grads and what challenges they’ve encountered with this group.

Takeaways:

8 in 10 hiring managers say a recent college graduate didn’t work out at their company in the past year, and 65% say they had to fire one

78% of hiring managers say recent grads spend too much time on their phones

More than half say recent grads are unprepared for the workforce and difficult to manage

1 in 6 are reluctant to hire this cohort"

Screens

Brain dead

Can’t read or write

Terrible at math

Can’t pay attention

Are uncoachable

—- that’s what our hiring managers have said the last two years. Public and private high school grads, all colleges.

Try grads who use pen and paper. They can think for themselves. And still do sports in their free time not doomsday scrolling on social media.

And if they’re not on their damn phones every five mins text or scrolling they’re in Chat SMS on their desktop computers running 10 lame as hell chat threads.

We had to fire one for poor quality work, forgetting to do tasks, showing up at internal mtgs unprepared, and losing her company iPhone every four months on hikes or other Bs.

Should be duplicated in all the education threads so parents know to make them put their phones away 8am-6pm daily and just heck at lunch break.

Why? Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, et. al. You can't get them off the crap with short attention spans. In some cases, the parents aren't much better. That's if they even have two parents raising them.

Attacking the nuclear family has done wonders for society! That's sarcasm for those too dense.

Ain’t it funny how China censors all of that (social media garbage) for children and teens but USA does not?

This is the dumbest comment. Nobody is indoctrinated at universities. Did you even attend or you quoting some Fox News line?

Obviously you haven’t been in college for a few decades.

DP... Obviously, you are a FOX-News indoctrinated troll who just believes what they have to say about it.

Yeah, not much.

Do you really believe college students are packing auditoriums to protest for trans rights? Look at to picture that's with that article. A small classroom with fewer protestors than students in even an advance math lecture. When the numbers get up to a typical Pysch101 lecture, wake me.

It does exist. The article cites several examples of it. There's ideological programming and brainwashing everywhere. It has been building for the better part of two decades.

Sorry to rain on your sacred cow (and your safe space).
Ever heard of the 1960's counter culture? Youth rebellion has existed for probably centuries. Most college student still go about their class schedules and attend parties. Then they graduate and move to the next stage of life.

I agree there is something wrong, but it's not political indoctrination. Seriously the one being politically indoctrinated is you, and I hope someday you realize that.

Most 1960s hippies never amounted to anything and the other half carried the country.

Unf the 1960s hippies did infiltrate the universities with their hippie philosophy and helped created the current day mess in the college system and then replicated in the public k-12 system.

Not true! Recent grads are well-educated in TikTok and grievance.

Yes Trump made sure TikTok is still up and running even though it is against law. Wonder how much crypto that cost?
Good point. We had the chance to save our children from a drug delivered to their phone screens, but it was overruled by the President. I hope PP 'indoctrination' sees the contradiction in her beliefs.

Many states are forbidding phones from 8am until school dismissal, including at high schools.

Too little too late, but must be done.

They also have the 996 program. Work 9am to 9pm six days a week. Don't want that either.

There's a happy medium

But you have democrats pushing half the population to work for the other half's life of leisure program. Let's call that the 120 program. One person working for two people and zero profit is allowed - modern day slavery.

Colleges are dominated by Democrats. They have f’d up higher ed just like they ruined cities, k-12 schools, the military, sports, & everything else they touch.

Translation: “Things were so much better when higher education, the military and sports were only for white males”
First, I totally agree that the prejudiced exclusivity of the past was wrong and should never have been allowed. College entrance should be open to all 💯.

Still, the capitalism of the markets has taken that and created a college for everyone to the point that some of these degrees are no longer certificates of education. They really are participation trophies. I'd be interested to know if the same holds for top 20 schools as for lower tier.

Because they treat the students and their overinvolved parents like customers rather than students. When someone is paying you 10s of thousands per year for a product, the institution (now business) is incentivized to keep the customer happy. So when little Johnny skips his lectures "because of his mental health" and fails his final, he and his parents can throw a fit and get the school to let him retake it. Little Johnny has done this his entire educational career, and expects it to continue in the workforce. Deadlines are mere suggestions, he should get endless second chances, and his comfort is paramount.

Johnny may be president one day.

Hell, Joe Biden graduated 76th out of 85 from SUNY law.

Oh come on! Career politicians don’t need any degrees or good grades. Just live off the govt dole annd taxpayers until they die. He had a good 50 years of that. Plus more now, we’re still pay for Joe Biden, his sons and wife to lollygag around doing absolutely nothing.

NP.

My kid just graduated with a bachelors' in computer science. He can write code in C, Java, Python, Javascript and several other languages, he can query data in SQL, OpenCypher and other query languages, he understands algorithms, he understands git and version control and modular programming and cloud and code reuse and best practices, he understands cryptography, machine learning, and many other things. And he and his classmates did all of this while there were Gaza protests and other things going on on campus.

Because guess what? YOU seem to falsely believe that "wokeness" and "DEI" and "pro Hamas protests" and "marxist ideology" everything else are 99% of what goes on on a college campus when in fact the REALITY of it is that it's barely 1% of what goes on on a college campus.

Sorry to rain on YOUR "sacred cow" of FOX News hyperbole and lies and gross distortion and exaggerations and fabrications. All of this nonsense of yours is to sow fear, uncertainty and doubt about higher education and dumb down the population because authoritarians view education as a danger and believe a dumbed-down populace is easier to mislead and control.

THAT is the biggest truth of this thread.

Hope he gets to the finance or mgmt or project mgmt side fast as AI does most of the coding and computer programming now.
