High school students crash near the Pentagon

Anonymous
In my lower income blue collar town lots of accidents happened that killed teens. Unfortunately. They involved the kinds of cars that people in lower income blue collar areas happen to have.
In this higher income white collar area of the DMV lots of teens die in unfortunate car accidents. They often involved the types of cars that families that live in higher income white collar communities often own.
Seems like it’s just a function of the types of cars that people in this area own.

Kids can crash in any car. A BMW would hopefully have more safety features.

It was a BMW that destroyed the family at Pyle a few years ago.

Parents giving high performance vehicles to inexperienced teenagers are profoundly reckless and I hope every single one of them are sued into oblivion for those accidents.

I absolutely agree if the parents were negligent they should be sued but it makes no sense to blame it on “a bmw.” Kids drive way too fast and kill themselves and others in all types of cars. (-a mom who drives an old Camry)

Have you really not noticed that 95% of these accidents involve a BMW?

Perhaps BMWs don't fare well in crashes.

The problem is that BMWs drive too fast too easily and drivers do not realize that they are out of control.

Are these self-driving cars?

Because otherwise, they are driven too fast by a driver. In this case a teen driver, in a car they had no business being in.

My teen drives my BMW SUV. But he’s not an idiot and and drive carefully. It’s the driver not the car to blame.

Lol. Guns don’t kill people, people do!

I actually think people are even dumber giving kids SUVs given that they flip at the slightest breeze.

Driving an old Camry isn't great either as it doesn't have all the safety features. You can easily make a wrong move and kill someone.

Well apparently the BMW safety features didn’t prevent it from reaching 100+ mph and then crashing into another car.

So please explain how the BMW was any safer in this situation than a 2003 Camry?

I’ll wait.

You’re an even nastier POS, for attacking her.

The make of car they were driving is relevant. Why do parents allow their teens to have access to high performance cars? It’s exactly the same thing as giving them an AR15 and some bullets and then being shocked when they shoot someone.

A 16,17 or even 18 year old has absolutely no business driving a high performance car like that. Parents who give their children cars like that or allow them to drive theirs are complicit in these crashes.

We get it. You cannot afford to get your kid an expensive car. But the idea that buying a kid a BMW is the same thing as buying them a loaded gun is ridiculous.

Why? They kill the same number of people annually.

Actually car crashes kill many more people annually than people with guns.

Toyotas can go 100mph too. It’s not the car or the privilege. It’s the driver. Lots of idiot teens drive fast. Rich and poor.

In general newer cars are safer. Rollover protection is the big feature that comes to mind. Camry vs BMW is a non issue in terms of safety features. Camry vs BMW is important when you’re talking speed.

Interesting overreaction.

I think you’ll find the data support the assumption that kids who drive fancy fast cars are more likely to be in a fatal accident.

I think I see a lot of self-conscious indignation in her post, lolz. Hits close to home. What do you want bet her kid drives an M3?

Yeah yeah yeah sure, nice deflection …… now tell us why none of those features prevented this crash, please.

A sombering statistic that I try to drill into my teens heads: DON'T get in the car, DO NOT be the passenger (too many in the car, the driver had "a beer", whatever) because more often than not in fatal car accidents -- the driver survives and IT'S THE PASSENGER WHO DIES.
Remind your kids that this is their responsibility to get different/safe/legal transportation (and of course, uber or we'll pick you up wherever, whenever, no matter what).

I think it's similar. If your kids are interested in shooting, buy them a bb gun and take them to the range. But you don't let 16 years have AR-15s and you don't let them have BMWs. Nearly all the tragic teenage car accidents in this area involve BMWs. It's too much car for an adolescent with immature brains. And I really hope the criminal justice system dealing with all these deaths find parents criminally liable for giving their children wildly inappropriate cars for their stage of development.

Buy your kid a new Accord then. Some car’s entire marketing and brand are all about performance and BMW is one of them. The last thing teenage boys need is to feel empowered or encouraged to be reckless behind the wheel.

I own a 540i and a Avalon (which is sorta like a Camry) and the BMW makes the Avalon look like it’s standing still.

Doesn’t stop them from trying to drive it like a race car though, does it?

No.
