119th CONGRESS
1st Session
H. RES. 59

Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the sermon given by the Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde at the National Prayer Service on January 21st, 2025, at the National Cathedral was a display of political activism and condemning its distorted message.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
January 23, 2025
Mr. Brecheen (for himself, Mr. Clyde, Mr. Grothman, Mr. Burlison, Mrs. Miller of Illinois, Mr. Harris of North Carolina, Mrs. Bice, Mrs. Luna, Mr. Moore of Alabama, Mr. Ogles, Ms. Greene of Georgia, Mr. Norman, Mr. Webster of Florida, Mr. Allen, Mr. Babin, Mrs. Houchin, Ms. Van Duyne, Mr. Baird, Mrs. Biggs of South Carolina, Ms. Boebert, and Mr. Griffith) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform

RESOLUTION
Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the sermon given by the Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde at the National Prayer Service on January 21st, 2025, at the National Cathedral was a display of political activism and condemning its distorted message.

Whereas the National Prayer Service is a longstanding tradition in which the United States publicly affirms dependence upon God and prays for the success of our President and Vice President;

Whereas, on January 21, 2025, President Donald J. Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance took part in the National Prayer Service at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC; and

Whereas the Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde, the bishop leading the inaugural prayer service, used her position inappropriately, promoting political bias instead of advocating the full counsel of biblical teaching: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That—

(1) it is the sense of the House of Representatives that the sermon given at the National Prayer Service on January 21st, 2025, at the National Cathedral was a display of political activism; and

(2) the House of Representatives condemns the Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde’s distorted message.

The offending part of Bishop Budde’s sermon, (bold added):

Let me make one final plea, Mr. President. Millions have put their trust in you. As you told the nation yesterday, you have felt the providential hand of a loving God. In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now. There are transgender children in both Republican and Democratic families who fear for their lives.

And the people who pick our crops and clean our office buildings; who labor in our poultry farms and meat-packing plants; who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shift in hospitals — they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation, but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals. They pay taxes, and are good neighbors. They are faithful members of our churches, mosques and synagogues, gurdwara, and temples.

Have mercy, Mr. President, on those in our communities whose children fear that their parents will be taken away. Help those who are fleeing war zones and persecution in their own lands to find compassion and welcome here. Our God teaches us that we are to be merciful to the stranger, for we were once strangers in this land.

May God grant us all the strength and courage to honor the dignity of every human being, speak the truth in love, and walk humbly with one another and our God, for the good of all the people of this nation and the world.

Praying for mercy sounds exactly like "the full counsel of biblical teaching" to me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Then again, I don't go to church expecting to have my ass kissed.

Unfortunately, I think part of the bishop's intent was to embarrass the President and Vice-President. If so, that was inappropriate for a national service. She could have refused to perform the service.

Same if for Biden's inaugural service the clergy deliberately went after Biden for not valuing life and supporting elective abortions.

Sorry. The Fat Man did not have to attend. Not obligated. He entered her church. If you go see your doctor to hear what you want to hear rather than the doctor's honest assessment of your health needs, then do not go. If you go see your trainer to talk sports rather than engage in a serious workout, then save your money and do not go. If you go to church to hear how great you are rather than some wisdom from the minister, then save your time and do not go.

I actually thought that Trump‘s comment about it when I asked about it by the press was nicely restrained, for him anyway . I think he just said that it wasn’t great and he didn’t like it or something. He resisted tearing into the policy.

But of course the women know how to behave appropriately, and the men don’t.

How are you training your son to behave?

Trump is not a Christian. If you hear him talk about the Bible he sounds like he's seen the book once in a motel bedside stand, maybe. Come into her church, he can hear about how he's not living up to the morals of Jesus Christ. Sorry, not sorry.

What is embarrassing about being asked to have mercy?

I would agree with you if Trump went to the Church during its regularly Sunday service/mass. But that was not the case here. This was a special service marking.......the inauguration of President Trump. Big difference. The bishop could have chosen not to hold the special inaugural service for....... President Trump in one of the churches within her dioceses. Or chosen not to have provided over the service herself---the parish Episcopal priest at this Church could have conducted the service.

Appealing to his mercy is an embarrassment?

That is how we treat kings.

What the heck has happened to this country?

I'm with you,pp. Asking anyone to be merciful at any time is OK.

Reverend Budde *is* the parish priest.

Her job is to comfort the afflicted, and afflict the comfortable. She preached the gospel. That is literally her job.

Frankly, if you are offended that a Christian minister suggests that the President should be merciful, then that says more about your sensitivities than anything. Get a life. The Fat Man regularly calls human beings by all sorts of awful names that I hope your children do not call you or your friends.
