Texas tonight--proof that the college system is broken

Right. It's not like they realized this yesterday. They knew WEEKS ago that they would miss the deadline. And yet they led on 50,000+ teenagers (the EA pool out of 92,000 total) until the 11th hour. That is unnecessary behavior in the midst of an already crappy process.

But they didn't tell the applicants until decision date (today) and now they are reviewing EA and RD applications together in one giant pool except for the tiny handful that they admitted today.
Upshot: there was no advantage of getting the application in by Oct 15th. In fact, there is likely a giant advantage to applying RD and having the extra 6 weeks to write essays.
Most insane: they didn't even admit most of the in-state EA auto-admits (top 6% in state get auto-admitted) but they did admit some RD decisions today.
Total cluster-f$%ck.

No you stink as a parent

Texas is unsafe you fool

Gid forbid you have a daughter you are even more disgusting

Texas may have the most vibrant economy in the country

You underestimate how many people turn in their applications last minute on the last week.

For a percentage growth that big, they should have seen if coming with increased applications earlier in the year or just increased interest from prospective student. Surely they have models

Texas is an extremely popular international application per Reddit.

I’m usually progressive, but we need a massive restriction on applications from east Asia.

The universities will accept who they want. Why are you scared of your kids competing against others from around the world?

Different poster. Because there is a ceiling on how great kids can be and there are far more kids who meet it than there are spots at universities. The international kids aren't bringing academic/extracurricular qualifications to the table that can't be matched by a very long line of exceptional American kids.

And, and this is a big, And..the amount of outright cheating and lying from East Asian applicants is horrific. Look at pictures of Chinese and Indian kids sitting for tests, where parents are literally on ladders outside the windows handing them answers. Also, there is a huge network of groups that steal the entrance exams for top universities and then sell the questions and answers online.

Guess what...they do that with the SAT as well and there is a massive network of consultants that are absolutely upfront that they will create an application for kids. Forge a transcript, create the ECs, write the essays...soup-to-nuts.

what are you talking about? (in bold)?

btw, on reddit, the international applicants talk a LOT about faking ECs, forcing transcripts, and fake LOR. And there are college consultants who help. it's a crazy cottage industry I had no idea about.
I've spent more time there this cycle (as this board has been kind of dead and taken over by trolls compared to by last go around in the college process) and it's been eye-opening.

YES. I was between jobs in November and spent way too much time on Reddit "Chance me." So many internationals 1000% make everything up. It's all such a load of complete and utter crap for the majority of international (Indian and Chinese) candidates.

Ask any kid at a top school about students who can't speak any English. Everyone scratches their heads and wonders how the hell they were accepted.

As long as they are admitting the very top students from Texas, I think they can do whatever they like. If you live in another state, you should already know that it is very hard to get into Texas-Austin.

?? If Harvard got a 40k increase to 100k apps, they’d also have admissions issues. UT had has a consistent steady rise from 40-70k apps over a long term period. They had 3x the increase in apps as years prior. I get your emotional you didn’t get your admission decision, but this is stupid.

Are you saying they went from 70 to 140k in a year?

no, it was not that big a bump. this is a failure to hire more $20/hour readers.

Yeah, education in TX is so lousy its flagship school gets 92,000 applications. Meanwhile the SUNY schools continue to attract almost no one from outside NYS.

Outside of UT Austin, not many apply from outside TX. SUNY schools are good, but located in more rural areas/smaller areas. Of course kids don't apply to an OOS school that is remote/hard to get to, outside of the flagships (For SUNY the closest thing to a Flagship would be Binghamton).

Why? They typically pay OOS tuition, sometimes another fee on top of that (not sure for UT Austin).
It's the OOS and International FULL Pay at double+ tuition that helps keep instate tuition lower.

As has been pointed out, numerous times, The University at Buffalo and Stony Brook University are the two flagship schools for New York.

Well my DD and all of her friends would never apply there. Same for my DS and his friends (male or female), because well, they don't want to live in a regressive state where it's challenging to get medical care you or your loved ones want.

Texas is none of these things. One of the best medical centers in the world is in Houston.

Unless you're referring to a specific type of "medical care".

Where the heck do you live? I live in DC and my teens and friends (a mix of private and public juniors and seniors) from upper NW would love to live in Austin. They're not making college decisions based on abortion care. I mean, really?
