Texas tonight--proof that the college system is broken

Anonymous
Texas received 92K apps and they weren't able to even look at most of them, despite having 3 months of time. But they didn't tell the applicants until decision date (today) and now they are reviewing EA and RD applications together in one giant pool except for the tiny handful that they admitted today.
Upshot: there was no advantage of getting the application in by Oct 15th. In fact, there is likely a giant advantage to applying RD and having the extra 6 weeks to write essays.
Most insane: they didn't even admit most of the in-state EA auto-admits (top 6% in state get auto-admitted) but they did admit some RD decisions today.
Total cluster-f$%ck.

Yikes, I’m sorry. That’s a mess.

92k apps doesn’t seem like a crazy number considering UCLA receives 165,000 and NYU receives over 100,000.

That’s kind of a nuts statement by Texas.

You don't have to apply or matriculate there. Its not like it will get any better given the priorities for education in Texas among the political leadership

Auto-admits have all been told they are admitted, they are just waiting on the decisions about their preferred major. But yeah, my ds and I were just discussing this. I am glad he didn't scramble to get his app in by Oct 15 just to find out he had to wait another month to get an answer. He applied on the December 1st deadline for RD so will know on Feb 15 (unless they delay that too.) I don't think anyone was even outright rejected today.

Bet they delay to March 15. No way to get it all done.

Agreed. they had 3 months for EA and couldn't do it. how are they going to get everyone reviewed in the next 30 days? Makes no sense.

They received 73, 000 applications last season. A near 20,000 application increase is substantial. UCLA has had massive application numbers forever. That’s an eye watering amount of apps for most admissions departments.

I thought the amount of kids applying to college was supposed to drop this year?? Jeez.

They didn’t hire enough readers.

They were still hiring right before Xmas.

Yeah, education in TX is so lousy its flagship school gets 92,000 applications. Meanwhile the SUNY schools continue to attract almost no one from outside NYS.

They care so little about education they made a massive university with one of the highest endowments in the nation and standout programs in various fields. All to show they don’t care at all about education!

I agree that for a large uni, they should have been ready for 90K apps, even if it's a large number than last year. They had time to see them come in and hire more people.

It’s supposed to drop after this year, but either way, this is following trend. A concentrated amount of institutions (t50 universities and t20 lacs) are going to become much more competitive, while everything else levels out with easier admissions.
