One of my mom's friends lives in the area (evacuation zone), and claims local authorities weren't doing enough to warn people. I think she expected door to door visits telling them to leave or something. For the life of me I don't understand people who live on the coast in hurricane prone areas who do not keep tabs on this stuff. She still likely wouldn't have left because forecasters have "cried wolf" too many times. If you don't understand the cone of uncertainty in hurricane forecasts and that evacuations are the price of living by the coast, you probably shouldn't have retired there in the first place. Sorry. |

My family is in Asheville area not Florida you moron. There were no evacuation orders until after the storm had already begun and even then it was only in the obvious flood areas. My family was expecting a lot of rain and were prepared for a week. This is going to go at least a month. Death toll will ultimately be hundreds if not thousands. Many like my family who survived the initial storm are trapped in their home with roads washed away and running low on food or water. I've seen more response from private organizations than federal. |

The feds will have the real power when they arrive. That area needs what the Army Corps of Engineers among others can deliver. No private organization is big enough to pay for those kinds of infrastructure repairs that will be needed. The feds will be instrumental in the long term recovery. Short term the private organizations are very important and can be nimble. They exist for a reason. |

Yeah. It can take three days before rescue workers can get to you. That's why we need to have enough water and food for three days. During Sandy, I worked in disaster / rescue and could not believe the people who did not take precautions (like having enough water) while not evacuating. Then, once the storm was over, they expected someone would save them right away. |

Many, many people in the mountains in Western NC have died.
The towns/communities of Fairview, Black Mountain, Swannanoa, and Barnardsville have been very hard hit. There isn't a full death count yet. It is taking time to locate and identify the bodies. |

For a large scale disaster, that affects multiple counties, you need to prepare for the fact that the federal response will be delayed at least 3 and more likely 4 or 5 days.
Individuals need to be prepared for at a minimum, the first 24 hours. Ideally 3 days, but many people can't or won't do that, so at least aim for 24 hours. The next 2-3 days ... neighborhoods/communities need to be prepared to help each other out. Counties, towns.. if not affected... should be stepping up in a large scale disaster the first 3 days. The state response should start to be seen by day 3, if there are parts of the state that didn't get affected. If it is a small state and the whole state was hit... there might not be much state response. The federal response should be vigorous after that .. especially by day 5. But in a large scale emergency it is unrealistic to think the feds are going to be able to show up much before day 5 in any particular local area. |

| We finally had contact with family in Asheville and Boone after 3 days of silence. No power and no water, only sporadic cell data, and no word on home damage but at least we got proof of life. The total communication blackout is like going back 100 years in time. |

My relative just outside of Asheville finally was able to drive to get communication service. He is busy helping neighbors clear trees. I am his closest relative of means (parents deceased, no wife or siblings in the area). He is 38 years old. Thankfully he was raised to care about people and has generously given supplies to his neighbors in need. That said, he has basically just lost his job (which depends on tourism) and probably won't have employment for some time. Asheville is in major pain. They depend on the leaf season and Christmas seasons for a lot of their economy (Biltmore/hotels/restaurants). Those months of the year are vital to them. So as an aside he's a Trump supporter and I am not. This is not something that matters to me at all. He is a very good person and works hard. I am sending him money and probably will for the foreseeable future as he was in a low wage job and pretty much living paycheck to paycheck. So I take offense to the person who wrote that "liberals" do not care about the people in that part of NC. It upsets me that some people don't think some other people are people too. Let's get over this nonsense. We are all Americans. We have MUCH more in common as human beings. |

Family friend evacuated out of Asheville yesterday after being told no running water for 3 more weeks. He could live without the power which also isn’t on yet.
A lot of people who had supplies ended up with nothing when their entire houses completely flooded and washed away. People are not suffering due to “a lack of planning and not heeding warnings”. |
