I have family in the immediate area. The entire response including preparation before the storm has been bungled. I don't believe the mayor can even be bothered to get on the twice daily status briefings. If you like bungled disaster responses, vote Democrat. [/quote]

What preparation are you expecting?  They announced a clear evacuation zone days ahead of time, the storm followed pretty closely to predictions.  What exactly will a MAYOR do in a Florida town?[/quote]

One of my mom's friends lives in the area (evacuation zone), and claims local authorities weren't doing enough to warn people.  I think she expected door to door visits telling them to leave or something.  For the life of me I don't understand people who live on the coast in hurricane prone areas who do not keep tabs on this stuff.   She still likely wouldn't have left because forecasters have "cried wolf" too many times.  If you don't understand the cone of uncertainty in hurricane forecasts and that evacuations are the price of living by the coast, you probably shouldn't have retired there in the first place.
