| Make it very clear to the HS Counselors that DC's wants UVA. Expects UVA, if they are near tippy top of the class. Ignore the BS re: no one knowing who's at the top of the class. |
Curious--5 years of a foreign language? AP in ALL subjects, including English? This is shocking and enraging. Don't blame you, but I am so happy to hear he's doing great. It all works out, but I agree his stats are fabulous. |
Many who were rejected didn't take AP Lang...have to take it. |
He took Spanish all 4 years in HS, including AP Spanish and also IB HL Spanish. Took 5 AP's (World History, Psychology, AB Calc. Spanish, and AP Gov), but also took a full IB courseload and 1 DE class. I really thought he did essentially everything he could, but it didn't work out. I suspect his essay probably wasn't great, and only so many kids from his high school could get in. In the past, all full IB students with good grades/scores got it, but that obviously has changed. |
| So he took a full IB diploma and AP classes? How is that possible? I sense a troll. Bye. |
Easy. He went through a Spanish immersion program from kindergarten, so he took AP Spanish in 10th grade. AP World was offered to 9th graders, so he took that freshman year. AP Psych was his elective as a sophomore, and IB students had to take AP Gov as a 10th grader in order to meet Virginia graduation requirements. AB Calc was his math class junior year, and senior year he took a 1-year SL IB math class. He didn't do great on his AP exams (one 5, three 4's, and a 3), but I think part of that was because so much of his HS career was impacted by the pandemic. No trolling here. His path was not uncommon at his HS, though he did better than most. |
| So a full IB diploma, too? Not the certificate? |
Yes. He did the ToK class, the extended essay, and the community service thing, too. It was a lot of work and took meaningful planning. It was a very good program for him in that sense. |
You people are such snobs, it's gross. LOTS and lots of kids go to these "meager" schools with lesser "cohorts" and do not just fine, but very well. If you're kid is not adaptable enough to excel on his or her own without being propped up by a school name and fellow students, perhaps they're not as superior as you think. My DH is an engineer, and now a hiring manager, and they recruit from everywhere. Not just "meager" schools and he gives not bonuses for going to ivy or other "superior" schools. Don't fool yourself. |
That would be West Point. |
| I think leadership positions also weigh heavily in admissions to UVA. |
Oh, please. |
New post. PP is not a troll. I can concur. My kid completed (and earned) the full IB Diploma and took AP courses as well. Kid is a first year at UVA and Echols. |
Yes. Nearly all E Schools are rigorous and the curriculum is very similar from one school to another. Its more about specific skills and which specific upper level in-major electives one took than about which E school one graduated from. |
What's an Echols? |
