UVA acceptance

For those whose kids were accepted into UVA, do you feel it was mainly grades/test scores or their involvement in ECs that helped their application?

Both. You can't just excel in one.

my DC who was admitted this past cycle in engineering said SAT/GPA is most important. around 1500 SAT and near 4.0 unweighted GPA should get you in.

Mainly GPA.

I know a kid with a 1550 SAT and a 4.0 unweighted (and great ECs) who got into top 5 school and didn’t get into UVA the last cycle. It’s not any one thing, and no set of scores guarantees you admission.

Did the kid ED or apply to a lot of other schools?

Pffft you don’t need unweighted 4.0.

Why would anyone go to uva for engineering? Do they even have an accredited engineering program?

It's very selective these days. It also matters which courses one took not just how they did.

Because it's vastly superior to the other somewhat meager in state options. Let's face it. E-school has always been far more selective than the college and the college is more selective than other engineering programs. in the end it just comes down to a better cohort.

Highest rigor; the kid was a total star. Not criticizing or saying the kid should have gotten into UVA; on the contrary, my point was that the idea that if a kid has a 4.0/1500 they’ll get in is completely detached from reality.

All of the above.

Straight As uw 4.0; 35 ACT; 5s every AP; very involved ECS, community service, athlete. Great essay and great teacher recs.

That was me 30 years ago. lol. I was bitter for a very long time. My son vindicated me with his acceptance this year- but headed to an Ivy instead
