Why would anyone go to uva for engineering? Do they even have an accredited engineering program?

Because it's vastly superior to the other somewhat meager in state options. Let's face it. E-school has always been far more selective than the college and the college is more selective than other engineering programs. in the end it just comes down to a better cohort.

Love the UVA boosters. VT much better for engineering and W&M better in most other disciplines. Won’t be much longer before JMU and GMU make UVA the number 5 state school in VA.

Hahahahahaha - and I'm a JMU alum. You must be joking.

my kid got into both VT and UVA for engineering and selected VT because it has a better engineering program.

rookie mistake, as far as job/career placement: UVA is going to lead to more leadership and management roles, and has a higher percent go into innovation/new technology in the private sector. Of course UVA engineering is not ivy level or even Ga-Tech or Berkeley level, but it launches to more white-collar level high tech jobs than VT

Yep.

I thought the only had an associates degree for engineering.

say what? DS entered in aerospace engineering at UVA and is now at Princeton for a P.hd in electrical engineering. Ignore the idiots who couldn't get in long ago and have no idea how Jim Ryan has improved the engineering schools over the last 8 years

Are you all joking?
UVA is the oldest University engineering program in the USA.

That would be West Point.

+1
I had to laugh at the PP's response. UVA is *never* even mentioned among historic (or even current) engineering schools. It's a non-entity.

UVA is ranked 38 out of 199 top engineering programs in the US by USNWR. My DS went through it and is now working on a DPhil at Oxford. She's received seven unsolicited job offers already.

You've told us this story countless times. An engineering program ranked 38 is NOT a top program. Please stop pretending otherwise.

In the top 18% of engineering programs is not a top program? How so?

Nope. My kid (in state) had a 3.99 GPA/4.43 wGPA with a 35 ACT and got waitlisted

Yield protection.

UVA doesn’t do yield protection, idiot.

Of course UVA does yield protection. How do you explain the disparity between ED and RD.

Yield protection is when you reject overqualified applicants because you don't think they would accept your offer.

Yield protection is also about students showing demonstrated interest in attending.

UVA does not track demonstrated interest. It does not yield protect like VT.

If UVA does not track demonstrated interest, why do they send personalized admissions links to high schoolers with their name in the URL?

Of course UVA yield protects. The people claiming otherwise sound so ridiculous.

Unless someone has inside information, they won't know which schools yield protect.

Hmmm didn’t see uva on that list. Maybe uva wise is ranked higher?

It's waaay down on the list. That was why I posted the link. Someone here was bragging (quelle surprise!) that UVA had a highly ranked engineering program. It does not.

You also have to consider the overall rating. Harvard is not on the top list your provided either.

Yes, exactly. Why would someone choose to study engineering at a school that is not highly ranked in that discipline?

UVa is ranked #38 in engineering...Virginia Tech #31

Undergrad rankings:

VT - #13
UVA - #37

Omg Nobody with a UVA engineering degree cares about the rank 🤣

The people who claim UVA yield protects have no clue how or why UVA admits anyone, ignore obvious common sense, and ignore direct statements from UVA admissions staff that they don't.

About 28% of the class of 2028 was admitted in ED.

Thank you

I don't think they do. They focus on GPA more than other top schools for in state admissions but I have not seen 4.5 GPA students getting into Ivy+ but getting rejected from UVA with any sort of consistency.
VT on the other hand rejects kids that get into MIT.

NP. I was under the ussumption that VT yield protected, HOWEVER I think that changed last year (HS class of 2024). Realize it's not official, but significantly more TJ kids attending than prior years per IG.

As someone noted above, they directly say they don't.
