DC Black Upper Class & Georgetown University

My DH fits this profile. He went to Jack & Jill growing up, member of Boule Chapter now, and his friends all attended amazing schools for both undergrad and grad school. Majority of his friends went to ivy league schools and a few went to HBCU. All went to graduate school.

Sorry forgot to answer OP's question. Based on my DH's experience and that of his friends (so purely anecdotal), I would say that no they do not pick Georgetown. They usually attended ivy league or HBCU.

We are a Jack and Jill family (now in 2024). Our oldest child went to Princeton (my husband's Alma matre) and then Harvard Law. He works in Big Law. Our second child went to Spelman and then Georgie Tech. She is at Nvidia. Our third child will start at Howard next month with plans to attend Harvard Law. Our baby is a rising junior. He would like to attend an HBCU as a computer engineering major. He is looking at NCA&T (my Alma matre) and Howard. In our friend group, the black kids tend to go to Ivies, UVA (we are in VA not DC), or an HBCU.
To be in the top 1% of household income in Virginia, the threshhold is around $650k per year. You are wealthy.

Ah, America, where everyone is UMC until the first 100 million….

interesting data when it comes to top HBCU and family income levels above 110K+, per Niche

Howard: 22%

Hampton: 3%

Morehouse: 21%

Spelman: 32%

Also academics, wise top HBCU get grades of B+

For context:

Harvard: 30%

Yale: 34%

Princeton: 11%

Columbia: 41%

Penn : 41%

Duke: 53%

Rice: 24%

Georgetown: 61%

You're a top 1%. Less than 1% of Howard students are from the 1% and leass than 30% are from the top 20% of income.

From those I know, Spelman has been the popular destination of choice for daughters over the last few years. The boys are headed to a mix of various schools (mostly Ivy or HBCUs)

Same here. Even for the couple of Georgetown alum I know, it was not on their kids’ lists although I did not inquire why.

Most black students at Harvard are from rich families not poor ones .

It looks like that’s the choice for real money .

HBCUs aren’t really for truly rich black people . It’s economically diverse and has lots of UmC legacy kids attending but far from the first choice for black elites

Ivy League is still the top choice, but there have been protesting at Ivy League schools about the over-representation of black immigrants, over AA that come from slavery
according this this, black immigrants have a 4 to 1 advantage over African Americans at Ivy League School

Yup, that's why there's a trend of black elites sending their children to elite southern schools

Folks, I do believe someone trashy is trying to stir the pot here.

Duke is ranked higher than harvard, UMC are sending their kids to "Southern Ivies" as opposed to NE ivies

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT= Rich African Students

Duke, Vandy, Rice, Georgia Tech, Emory= Rich African American Students

Cornell, Columbia, NYU=Rich Carribean American Students

Georgetown, John Hopkins, UCLA, Stanford= Mix

I think Penn is in the second group to though, right?

i think penn would be in the rich african group

Not in my experience - they were not from African families. Several were legacy Penn and a few were AA that are not financially in this DC Black Upper Class categorization.

I don't even know OF any UMC black families who are thinking about Duke, and in what world is it ranked higher than Harvard? I went to Penn, and the children of my peers are looking at high profile HBCUs and Ivies.

No one I know of is looking at Duke or Vandy. UVA is as far south as most black folks I know are willing to go UNLESS to go to an HBCU cause racist townies without the nurturing embrace of an entire school administration is suboptimal...

That's a 4 to 1 representation not advantage. African students etc are not seen differently in the admissions process from Afro-American students.

Really no such thing as high profile HBCUs. To turn your nose up at Duke but then your DS attends Morehouse is comical.
