who in their right mind is paying $55,000 a year for a DC private, then pay ivy league prices at an HBCU, that is underfunded, where you have to live with mold, rats, and roaches

Howard, Spelman, Morehouse are so culturally important that many would do it.

Many rich black families like HBCUs. You don't need to deal with moldy dorms if your DC just gets a nice new apartment in Atlanta.

Duke is ranked higher than harvard, UMC are sending their kids to "Southern Ivies" as opposed to NE ivies

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT= Rich African Students

Duke, Vandy, Rice, Georgia Tech, Emory= Rich African American Students

Cornell, Columbia, NYU=Rich Carribean American Students

Georgetown, John Hopkins, UCLA, Stanford= Mix

Did you go to Georgia Tech pp? I'm sorry but it seems misplaced. There's only 4 schools in the southern elite, if your going to add a public school it would be UNC/UVa.

I was only making the point that these elite schools in the south have a majority generational African American population among the black students, while NE ivy league schools are majority non African American among the black population

This stuff is in the classrooms also, outside of Howard and spelman, hbcu degrees aren't valued by employers..... morehouse used to be included with this group, but not anymore

Yes, not wealthy.
Class doesn't necessarily equal wealth anyway. There can be lower class people with a lot of money from their government salaries.

WTH does that mean? Are you describing the Trumps?

Interesting. A good friend's sister had her kids in Jack and Jill. They are now in college. Maybe not as widespread as it used to be, but appears to still exist in certain communities.

If this thread is meant to be about the "DC Black Upper Class" then why even bother with whether or not their HBCU degrees are "valued by employers"? They'll get hired by their family businesses just like every other rich kid. Maybe we should define what we are all talking about? Is this about AA families with high salary jobs? Or is it about families with businesses and/or enough real estate to live well off rents?

IYKYK

Two different friends, grew up in two different states, attended primarily white HS, and their parents insisted they attend an HBCU for college. Same for HS friend.

Not sure if you know any current students, but HBCUs are having a moment (and I would include A&T and Clark). Georgetown had a buzz during the Thompson/AI era, but now is impacted by the deferred facilities maintenance, rats and lack of successful sports teams. Most students don't want that campus experience and outside of the FS school, there are better options. Per the 2023/24 CDS, Georgetown students are overwhelmingly white, Asian and international.

Reading this knowing I have lunch today with fellow JJ moms from my chapter.

I don't know what level of "upper class wealthy" this post is about. I would argue my family is UMC, not wealthy. My husband and I are both black. Together we make just under $850K. We are a Jack and Jill family (now in 2024). Our oldest child went to Princeton (my husband's Alma matre) and then Harvard Law. He works in Big Law. Our second child went to Spelman and then Georgie Tech. She is at Nvidia. Our third child will start at Howard next month with plans to attend Harvard Law. Our baby is a rising junior. He would like to attend an HBCU as a computer engineering major. He is looking at NCA&T (my Alma matre) and Howard. In our friend group, the black kids tend to go to Ivies, UVA (we are in VA not DC), or an HBCU.

Yeah whoever that is, they’re wildly off base. Jack and Jill is popping more than ever (cause there’s more wealthy black families than ever!!)

It’s a massive lie that HBCUs aren’t doing well. They have really good internship and career access that rivals the top colleges.

Ah, America, where everyone is UMC until the first 100 million….
