Seems to me that his experience working at MCPD and having deep insights in MoCo communities and neighborhoods are valuable things that he could bring to MCPS. I'm liking both of these hires so far.

Reporting everything is going to make MCPS look bad, but now he will work for them.

Correct. Being former MCPD and then transitioning to MCPS creates an inherent conflict of interest because on the MCPS side, sometimes you have to tell on people who might have failed in their jobs on the MCPD side, and it's hard to do that if some of those people are your friends.

Before people get excited about Marcus Jones, they should really interrogate how Ed Clarke did in the job, as he was also retired MCPD. Hopefully Jones is better and more active and independent, but he could be more of the same.

So you’re judging him on things you think he may/may not do in the new position, using an entirely different person as your proof. Got it.

I’m excited. I like Jones. I see this as a good move.

But I don't really see why he would be critiquing the MCPD investigation process -- that's for the MCPD Chief, or the County Council, to do. MCPD staff don't report to him.

One positive thing is that he presumably will not be afraid to refer things to MCPD. It's also likely a positive that he is pretty familiar already with the specific gang activity in the County and things like how the drug markets operate, so he knows what to look for. Someone from outside the county would presumably have a learning curve on that. Also, unlike Florida and South Carolina, Maryland is not an attractive retirement spot for retired law enforcement from other states, so we wouldn't be in a strong position to recruit former LEO from another state. If they are going to move their family, they are going to a state that doesn't tax their police pension.

I don't know anything about this guy -- he could be awful. But the mere fact that he was MCPD police chief isn't at all disqualifying from my perspective. And I've generally been pretty satisfied with MCPD response over the last decade or so.

I don't know how Marcus Jones feels about MCPD. But he was its chief and he has partnered with MCPS to spin and talk about crap that he knew were lies because again, regardless of whether they're MCPD or MCPS, MoCo is gonna protect MoCo. And since he was comfortable with the garbage spin that he spouted alongside Brian Hull here, I'm not convinced he'll suddenly become a truthteller.

The tangled relationship between the two is why MCPD stopped always posting on social media when a crime or serious incident was happening at a school because MCPS put pressure on MCPD that they were stirring the community up and making their life more difficult. Everything in MoCo is political and a the chief of police being installed in a chief position in its sister agency MCPS is a political move. It serves someone or something. It's not a coincidence.

Haha.. MCPD has never covered up for MCPS. The reason we heard about the alleged Rockville HS gang rape is because MCPD put out a press release.. MCPS was busy covering it up.
