Pass the Laken Riley Act

The biggest problem I see with this bill is that it blurs the lines between federal vs state/local jurisdictions and authorities. I can see it getting challenged in the courts on that grounds and would put SCOTUS in yet another real dilemma if they were to set precedent to keep it in place.

This is an open invitation to police brutality and murder.

I just read the bill. My own sense of it is that:
the "Sense of Congress" statements are so cravenly political they do not even belong in any legislation ever
the "Sense of Congress" faults the Biden administration for having allowed him to be released in Georgia--a Republican state--after a minor shoplifting charge--not something the federal government has jurisdiction over.
After reading the provisions of the bill itself, I have doubts about it even being implemented effectively.
It's a bad bill.

Balogna. I don't believe this garbage.

One-hundred seventy Democrats voted against the bill. The ranking Democratic member on the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York, criticized the legislation on the floor, accusing Republicans of “exploiting her death for a partisan stunt” and “throwing together legislation to target immigrants in an election year.”

Laken and her family mean nothing to democrats.

Laken and her family mean nothing to the GOP. Don’t fool yourself. Pure political stunt.

You GOP supporters are the worst gullible self righteous fools.

You are trying to use reason and logic with people who believe everything the right-wing propaganda machine tells them.

Don’t waste your breath.

What's the US gonna do about it? Theyet everyone in anyway. That's way I wouldn't have to spend any money jailing human scum. Just ship them to the US.

That’s actually what has been happening. Venezuela is a broke socialist country that can’t afford to run the jails anymore . Venezuelans have been getting kicked out of every country they’ve migrated to on the way to the Us

Stop to the ad hominem attacks and stick to the issues. You look like you can’t debate the actual points of the bill when all you do is insult a political party and their voters.

Better for the dems to lose in the courts than to have the public see them oppose this bill in an election year.

So this act at the SOTU was all more manufactured performative BS.

Jose Ibarra, 26, is accused of using a mystery object as a weapon to kill the 22-year-old Augusta University student. It's unclear if authorities have retrieved the object used as the murder weapon.

Rest peacefully, Laken. I am sorry you were not protected by the people who are in charge of country.

what happened to her of course was awful, unbelievable heartache for the family, but "the people in charge", whether R or D, fail Americans everyday. More people die of gun deaths by the hands of real Americans everyday than by illegal immigrants. Why are you not upset about that?

You don't seem to care when children die by gun violence. Your only response is "thoughts and prayers", which is meaningless.

I'd believe your "sorry" more if you hated the gun violence and easy access to guns in this country as much as you hate illegal immigrants.

Well, the families of Sandy Hook, Parkland, and Uvalde might be available to talk about how the murder of their children has meant nothing to the GOP.

+1 exactly
