This weekend won't happen....I think you will all survive without basketball by the way other sports and activities are being missed too.

Its really hard to reschedule when an entire day of games are canceled because we can't magically make more gyms appear on other weekends. We have games back to back all day on every scrap of alloted gym space. Our winter permit ends on a certain date. We already have multiple days with canceled games we are trying to reschedule.

Right but this is Mother Nature....this is not FCPS's fault. Winter happens-have some fun outside.

It would be “just winter” if it snowed all night and tomorrow AM and it turned out then that the buildings could not be safely opened. It is a decision not to spend $ clearing lots and paths instead. And that sucks.

I just got an email from my local rep (supervisor) and he acknowledged this was a "boom scenario" storm and VDOT was sort of behind clearing things, county wide. So, not, it's not as you say. It's just not as clear as is possible right now. It's a bummer but not the end of the world.

However, plowing of parking lots and shoveling/salting of sidewalks can still leave something to be desired, even in a place that gets a lot of snow. Also there’s a lot less risk tolerance than there was in the 80s and 90s when we were growing up and yes, their schools close or delay more often as well. But no, in Ohio/Michigan/etc. they would not be cancelling prime HS basketball games for this amount of snow a whole day in advance. Condition of the parking lots be dammed. lol.

This is true.
-Northern Ohio Native that grew up with lots of lake effect snow.

I'm also a northern Ohio native and still have family in the area. They've closed twice this week for the cold, have had less snow than us, nothing has been closed for snow. Kids basketball would NEVER be closed for snow, they plow the roads there.

You're mythical Northern Ohio-land must be different from mine then. My entire family is still there too and, yes, they do close basketball for snow. And no, the roads aren't instantaneously plowed. Not only per my family, but from my friends Social posts about wha roads are bad and now plowed, and which are.

You don’t need a bunch of “infrastructure” or “expertise” to address 2 inches of snow! Just another BS excuse (like Covid) for people not to do their jobs.

And if it’s so unsafe out there, why are so many people out driving, going out to eat, etc? The ONLY things closed today are SCHOOLS!!

And the ONLY thing that will be closed tomorrow will be school sports. Restaurants, malls, bowling alleys, stores, hospitals, movie theaters. All open. But I guess FCPS is special.

Does it really have to be explained that there is a difference between families/individuals deciding to go out to eat and assuming risks, and schools opening where the bus drivers have to show up for work at at 5:00 AM and drive 100,000 kids to school in the snow, on uncleared streets? Or that kids have to be able to walk to school on uncleared sidewalks? Or that high schoolers are driving on uncleared streets? This morning, there were lots of accidents on the roads, and even main roads (95, 50, FFX County Parkway) were not plowed. I had posted earlier that my friend's husband's 45 minute commute took him 2 hours. And not everyone got 2 inches. Some of us got about 5". FCPS has 11 snow days built into their schedule. We have used up 2.

Fairfax county rec centers were closed too, BTW.

I got emails/texts from my vet, eye doctor, dermatologist, gym, and kids’ gymnastics gym that they were all closed today for weather. So sorry, I call BS.

My Burke neighborhood saw its first plow at 2 pm today.

Geez, the amount that posters care about kids basketball is a bit concerning.

Not special, but different. Those places you listed are businesses, that rely on sales/revenue to stay open. FCPS does not.

Basketball doesn’t have a long season and they have very limited gym time. So anytime they cancel is disappointing, especially since it’s now closed on a Saturday after the storm. Friday obviously made sense but most other businesses are open today. They already closed 2 weeks ago for what turned out to be nothing.

Well, it happens every year, so it’s best to prepare them this year for future cancellations.

I think PP was referring to how much other people care about posters expressing disappointment. There is a bizarre animosity on this board toward anyone who is even remotely enthusiastic about sports. This area isn’t even close to over the top crazy compared to other parts of the country. I don’t get it. Why spend your time telling other people they don’t get to feel disappointed? Like who is the authority on disappointment? And when people post it is in fact the kids who are disappointed, they still don’t believe it. Maybe they just have apathetic kids who lay around?

Covid showed their true colors — just looking for ANY excuse to close schools and sit home. They they justify it based on “safety.”

This is why lots of people moved out of the area during Covid.

That’s great! It’s a little overcrowded anyways.
