Mine applied to 11 EA’s, 1 ED1, 1 rolling and had 4 RD’s ready to go. Got in to rolling with merit and ED1. The rest now feels like a waste of time but we weren’t sure what would happen in this highly unpredictable college admit round to an UMC white male with great stats. The colleges are responsible for this madness with TO and their other vague criteria for entry with emphasis on other things besides meritocracy that only they know!!! |
I'm sure the quality of the counseling is high at some of these private schools, but I would be absolutely livid if my kid's school refused to release a transcript at our request. That level of control is about the school, not the student. There are legitimate reasons to apply to more than 10 schools. I can't believe that after spending all that money, parents are putting up with that. |
Georgetown Day School does as well. I don’t know why this person is so spun up about it and intent on dismissing the fact that this does happen at some private schools. |
GDS does limit. I have a senior (who was admitted in the ED round). It was 12 school limit this year which was an increase from 10. The increase from 10 to 12 schools had the requirement that 5 schools be "foundational" as that's where there's been the most variability in admit rates.
And, GDS is very good about ensuring all applications are withdrawn if you are accepted ED. |
The privates limit apps in order to try and get a good outcome for all of their students in any given class. Not good for one superstar to suck up all of the spots at Ivys, etc |
How very Socialist of them. And very ironic. |
^^^It’s all about the DEI in DMV privates don’t you know! |
People who choose these schools should do their homework and know the system going into it. If you don’t like it, attend elsewhere. They want positive outcomes for as many of their students as possible (who are being compared against each other as an applicant pool). This approach has benefits for the students and school as a whole. 12 is still plenty of college applications and most kids will end up at the right place with multiple offers of admission. |
This isn't true for my son. He's applying to 20. He's high stats but didn't get in ED . He has a couple safeties and targets but most of the list are reach schools. It has been a crazy amount of work for him but I think it makes sense to apply to a lot if you are hoping to get into one of single digit acceptance rate schools. |
Merit is not limited to GPAs and test scores. When will people figure that out? And, there are a lot of kids out there with great stats. Mine applied to 7 EA, 1 rolling and 1 ED reach. So grateful she got in to ED school that is much harder admit for females. It was nice to have some early/rolling admits as well, now that it is over so fast. So, not a waste. She did an excellent job communicating on the supplements, which is an important part of the equation. |
What bugs me is the kids who apply to Harvard, Yale or Stanford SCEA and then proceed to apply to additional Ivys after getting accepted “just to see” after winning one lottery ticket. |
Why not |
Exactly. And I don’t think that the poster was saying schools don’t do this- they were saying why would you send your child to a school that does this? The schools do it to protect themselves and to help their reputations to the detriment of the children. |
This is the dumbest comment ever. I’m certain 20 colleges included great choices. |
Did you at least withdraw those other 16 apps ? |
