Dating across the political aisle

Anonymous
I am moderate, mostly voting Democrat, and my hard-core democrat DH drives me crazy with party politics. There is no way I could date a Trumper who is as rigid and political as DH.

I'd be fine with dating someone with different political opinions. The issue is that being a republican today requires you to believe all kinds of ridiculous things that are just not true (Biden is involved in some giant bribery scandal that there's no evidence for, the Jan. 6 attack was antifa/tourists/FBI plants, Donald Trump didn't try to overthrow the government, Democrats/Jews/various bad people are bringing in immigrants to replace white people). Or, even if you don't personally believe these things, you have to vote for and give power to people who do.

But a democrat Pfizer exec would be fine. My body, my choice, unless it’s sponsored by Pfizer

Good luck discussing logic with American loonies. Wait until they realize no one in Europe or Asia or anywhere agrees with their extremist abortion beliefs.

(Which obviously reduces their dating market to fellow loonies)

That's why the evangelical, anti-choice, home school set likes to indoctrinate their daughters and marry them off young to older members of their congregation. And they vote Trump.

My boyfriend used to vote R but doesn't anymore. I could not have a relationship with a man who does at this point in time, and probably never again.

This is a good question. As a black man, who is Republican, but voted for both Biden and Hillary because I simply cannot stand Orange Boy, I have found many educated Black women incredibly progressive. They are not only very progressive, but very opinionated about it to the point of hatred toward you if you simply hold a different point of view. I can live with someone who has a different opinion than me on many issues as long as we agree to respect each others opinions. And women are absolutely free to have their opinions and they are absolutely free to avoid those who don’t agree with those opinions. Personally I just tend to avoid people like that and if they avoid me that’s fine as well. We are a divided country and will remain so for a long time I think.

I will tell you this, if you honestly tell any woman you are dating that you are a Republican, the women you have access to will shrink by 95% in the Northeast. I wonder if some men are lying to their dates in fear of rejections if they don’t vote Democrat.

+1. Women have rejected their own fathers, siblings, best friends over political differences so rejecting a date will be even easier. I do not understand federal Republics very well to be honest. My African country is a so called “democracy” on paper, but abortion is legal and free. In the United States the biggest democracy, in some states women don’t have access to this important healthcare service. Maybe that’s how democracy works in a Federal Republic I am not sure to be honest.

False after the baby is already viable.

Or, name the country and we can find the law.

My husband and I have a mixed marriage. He's an anarchist and I'm a socialist. Oh wait....that's not what you're asking, is it?

It's hard for me to imagine dating a conservative because politics is such an essential part of my worldview and daily life. (Cue reading outrageous articles from the WaPo and NYT in the morning.) But essentially what matters is whether someone is a good person or not, so I suppose it's possible.

When we disagree, we agree to disagree and acknowledge a difference in opinion, not that the other person is misinformed or stupid or a bad person. We are older millennials.

This is the only sane comment (and relationship) in the whole thread.

If you two haven't read Orwell's Homage to Catalonia I highly recommend it

Those baby mamas are super "progressive" until someone reminds them not to buy soda and junk food with food stamps as that's not very good for their kiddos.

WTF dude? PP describes his experience with educated Black women and you jump to "baby mamas" and their food stamps?

Can you make the bolded into an actual sentence so we might know what the hell you are trying to say?

Not really. Because it depends on the nature of the differences. If we're haggling over the proper marginal tax rates, then sure. If we're arguing over whether a woman is a full human being entitled to bodily autonomy, then not so much. And, from the flip side, if you're one of those people who believes that a zygote has a soul and is just as morally important as a fully formed human; then abortion is murder, and I don't see how you could just let it slide and be married to someone who supports the slaughter of millions of innocent souls.

As clearly bolded within the previous comment, I was reacting to "abortion is legal and free" in some unknown African country. As far as I know, in literally no country other than a totalitarian society, is third trimester abortion a legal thing.
