Do today’s teens read Great Expectations at all? This was one of our class reading assignments in 7th grade, and I can’t imagine it being assigned to my 7th grader now. |
This. Why are people here so obsessed with sleep schedules? |
I don’t see anyone obsessed with sleep schedules. A 14 yr old (or adult) up gaming all night or watching who knows what on YouTube and then sleeping until 1-2pm is NOT in the realm of normal or heathy. |
It is pretty normal on breaks for teens, which is what we are talking about. |
2pm is disordered |
| I’m 47 and just woke up. I’m having coffee and reading DCUM while the rest of the family, 2 teens and DH, are still asleep. We are all on vacation. These days are rare. |

I have 12 and 15 year boys - they got up at 8 am to swim laps today. Yesterday they were up at 7 am to go ski. When they “sleep in”, it’s only until 9 am. The reason they are like this is because they are used to early am swim meets, ski team, soccer practice, crew practice etc. My 15 year old laments the fact that his friends sleep in so late that they miss the first chair and fresh powder. We didn’t plan it this way, but I have to say that I love that they don’t sleep the day away. We can get so much more fun stuff in on the weekends and they can get homework done more efficiently.
But the only reason it happened this way is because they grew up in ny, where pools and fields were in short supply, so we always had sat and sun practices at 7 or 8 am. Then we moved to a mountain town where they got up early to ski during holidays and continued early morning sports like crew and swimming. Otherwise, I have no doubt they would be sleeping in like champs. So, my only advice is to schedule something on the weekends that they want to go to. Or a job if they like money. |
| breaks are a free-for-all for my kids. they work really hard during the school year. (one was just accepted to an Ivy for college.) they're on the cusp of adult hood during which they'll have to follow the rules and go to bed at an earlier time. We let them stay up, have sleepovers, go to late parties, play video games. you're only young once and the years of freedom go by so quickly. |
| My teen just got up, too. Let your kid be, geez. Your teen works hard at school all year, those DMV school start times are a real killer for most of the kids. They are go, go, go, go, go. Appreciate that fact. Let your teen rest, and refuel. I did the same as a teen. Teens need more sleep. |
THIS let them f’ing be. You all are so annoying |
Really? I mean if it was everyday, all year round, sure. But for a few days over Christmas break, it seems fun - and fun is healthy. I could seen a teen choosing to stay up late to have some down time away from some of the controlling parents on here. |
It’s not “a few days.” It’s two weeks. And for these same posters I’m sure it’s every weekend and all summer too. |
| Well, I don't manage my teens' schedules. Its break. Let them stay up late and sleep in. |
+2. If there is nothing the next day (practice or whatever) then she manages her own sleep. |
Actually, it's recommended for teens to get 10 hours of sleep every night. |
