If people regularly think you look a decade younger

My MIL is 90 and ppl routinely could not believe it. In her case it's not the skin (she's pale and very wrinkly), but rather her overall vigor and gait. She's always been active and energetic. She still lives independently.

The lesson I got from her was keep moving.

This is very, very true. I had a yoga instructor who was retired from her first job and her face looked like a very old lady (I don’t think her hairstyle was helping, she had very golden girls hair and we were in the early 2000s), but the way she moved! She was so bouncy and flexible! She moved like a young person and her body was toned like a young person, only her face looked like she was in her 60s or 70s.

Please.

This is the easiest compliment to give and make people feel good. The ladies who do my nails always tell me I can’t be old enough to have kids in high school and that I look like I’m no older than 30! I’m 45, my oldest was born when I was 29 and I’ve always looked within 5 years of my age. I am fit and put together but make no mistake, I look like I’m in my 40’s. I get this at hair salons, when I order drinks at the bar, etc.

This is the easiest compliment to elicit a smile and a tip. The only people old enough to care about looking 10 years are the ones old enough to have the disposable income to tip for flattery. That’s why people do it.

Anyways, that’s just my take based on experience.

Things that help
- Asian
- Naturally thick hair
- Dressing well (age appropriate) and staying active--->improves energy/confidence.
- Low BMI (genetics but now in my 30s I also have to eat 80% healthy to maintain)
- Tret + sunscreen

Things that I don't do (yet)
- Botox/lasers/cosmetic surgery
- Get enough sleep
- Low stress lifestyle - I have a demanding job and had a serious health scare a few years ago that I am managing

I have many friends and sisters and colleagues my age, 45. I know a ton of women. Most are professional, affluent, healthy and happy. Many are diverse. All of them look their age. Many look good for their age. But they look their age. The only women I know in real life, not these DCUM legends in their own minds who I suspect may just be delusional, who look a decade younger in reality own medical spas, do Pilates, do laser facials, have extensions, microblading, and extensive work done and make themselves their full time job. The rest of you, you look 45. Trust me. You do. I myself look great. But 45.

I'm in my early 50s and people regularly think I look quite a bit younger than I am.

It's my perfect skin which is just genetics (although my teens and early 20s were a goth phase -- so I didn't ever tan, which probably helped, given how fair I am). I'll admit that my skincare routine consists of sleeping in my makeup whenever I wear it, rubbing whatever mascara is left in the morning off in the shower, and using a drug store moisturizer. That's it, lol, so I have no secrets to tell. I also have really full blonde hair that people comment on a lot. Again, just a gift of the genes.

I’m Indian but have gray hair that I’m too lazy to keep up. Started looking much older mid 40s after losing both parents. Light makeup and dying hair helps some. Wear hair natural/curly rather than blow dry. I dress young/more casual.

I’m AA, in my late 50’s and can pass for 40. My co-workers in their 30’s flipped out when I told them how old I was. I have no wrinkles, sagging or lines and have a baby face. I do get regular facials, do daily sunscreen, wear an hat when I’m in the sun. I also use a vitamin C serum and retinol because I’m starting to get hyperpigmentation. My mother and MIL are in their mid 80’s and look fantastic. I hope I can keep it up as long as they have.

I think most people think they look younger than they are for XYZ reasons. It is a common compliment. In fact most people look their age.

+1. Or black. No one thinks white women look a decade younger.

Plenty of white women do. The only advantage other races have is melanin which blocks out UV rays. Hate to shatter your self serving fantasy but so long as a white person stays out of the sun they’ll age just as well if not better

Mine: stable weight on the lower side of healthy BMI, really good sunscreen year around and a hat in the summer, I've never smoked, rarely drink, good diet, good genes, botox, lifting weights. I don't have grey hair at almost 50 and also I'm getting my period like clockwork, so things might change after menopause.

Comments like these really call into question my belief that people are getting clear feedback that they look young. I mean, really? You meet someone and say, oh I have a 10 year old (or 20 yr old whatever) and they give you a dirty look? Really?

I’ve been through it, too. Mentioned my 30 year old and people I work with flipped out. They thought I was 42. I’m 52.

Anonymous wrote:To everyone crowing about "no wrinkles". I hate to break it to you, but wrinkles are not the only marker of aging. Loss of facial fat, skin laxity, the beginnings of jowls and nasolabial folds, neck bands, etc... these things give away your age even if your hair isn't white and your skin is smooth. Post-menopause, add a thicker middle to that list. I have yet to meet a person over 50 of any race that doesn't have at least some of the items that I listed.

+1. No one will ever convince these people that others are just being kind in going along with their self-perception.

Excuse me this is the beauty and fashion forum not the harsh truths and reality forum. Take that nonsense over to relationships or real estate, we are here to believe we are pretty.

In my industry, I work with a lot of teens and people in their 20s and they often think I am in my late 20s. I will take it since I am in my 40s.

A lot of it is genetics, but I agree with being thin and fit, using sunscreen, getting a good night's sleep, not smoking, eating healthily, limiting alcohol, and getting exercise. I don't do Botox yet.

Well duh, obviously melanin is a huge advantage other races have, which is why they age better. People can’t or won’t avoid the sun entirely so white people are never going to age as well, and certainly not “better”
