Jealousy among siblings and spouses

Most wealthy people I know don't wear handbags. Actually, I am surprised anyone carries a handbag any more, in 2023. And before cell phones (now many people use them as wallets, which makes sense to me), I still found it sad that grown women needed the attention of carrying any kind of status symbol - whether it is a stroller, a handbag, a coffee mug, whatever. Something I hear mentioned on DCUM often, I would also never in a million years carry an expansive bag or wear high end clothes to work, because I work with women, and women can be nasty. Since you asked.

What people wear and drive tells you very little about their financial situation.

Don’t read into the overall financial situation of people that you engage in small talk with at a party once or twice a year.

Certainly don’t let it affect how you feel about your life or your personal decisions.

Perhaps a book on emotional boundaries would help?

Most wealthy people I know carry very nice handbags. Not all of them, but the vast majority. Mostly recognizable designer bags. So there you go - your experience is just anecdotal, just like mine.

I find the women here so sanctimonious and tone deaf - showing off about their VHNW, they 7 figure HHI, etc really rubbing it in. Good job, ladies…

You do you! I don't wear jewelry or college Swarovski figurines, either. But I know a lot of women who don't consider anything less than those things as a real Christmas present. Some people are into stuff, and other are not. I don't care about stuff like that, and I do not feel the need to apologize to anyone, or explain myself. I don't feel bad for being me, and asserting my personal preferences. Enjoy your expensive handbag, or whatever. I don't need that stuff.

I am am not a handbag person. However a great deal for on a beige coach purse that has held up well, but was surprised me was how many people would look at it to see the logo, and compliment the purse even sometimes. This is a very basic but well made beige purse so I was really surprised- Coach isn’t even that high end of a brand I believe. Somehow people care. Anyways, figure out whatever aesthetic works for you and stick to that.

And agree- the one family I know who drives a Range Rover is renting their house.

I’m one of the PPs. I buy simple leather bags in classic colors without any logos on them and use them for years. I’ve never spent more than $200 on a bag. Look online

Agree. So many of the designer bags are stolen and sold on Ebay. I don't want any part of that.

No. You need to be happy with your preferences. I am wealthy, but I avoid designer logos and jewelry. I'm just not into those things. I LOVE clothes, on the other hand (without logos). When I'm around relatives who wear branded items, I don't feel inferior at all. We have different ways of being happy, that's all.

But that is just it. I work in D.C., and there is no way I am wearing designer anything or carrying designer anything. Even in the nice neighborhood (singular).

Plus, IDC what so and so is carrying/wearing, at all. I am adult, an individual, I don't need to carry what plebes are carrying. If you know me, you know me, if not, that is fine. I don't need to impress a bunch of losers that I pass on the street.

Most of the rich people I know wear clothing from Costco.

Just… food for thought.
