Wait - Since when does POC only refer to people that actually look non-white? My DC’s buddy is half black, but has golden blond straight hair. Siblings are more obviously mixed race. However, they all identify strongly as black. Are you saying kid isn’t POC? What?? |
I’m south asian and I thought it was funny. How is it any worse than ABCD? |
This proves a point, "POC" is also a pointless term, along with "Hispanic". These two categories have no meaning at all, not just that they are a social construct, they even fail at being that. |
| I think OP is spot on. No real reason to go to Wakeforest |
Noooo…. Don’t apply one conversation about a “pretty-white looking” Hispanic kid to your child’s friend. We are also mixed race family and my child has BROWN skin and is a POC. |
If your kids attend the Cathedral schools you have zero room to talk. |
| One family's observations. In this case, their perception equals the reality of what they saw during their visit. Many other schools struggle with the same issue. The haters really need to pipe down. |
Uh, NCS is only 54% white. STA is 57% white. |
I’m sure that kid was checking the Hispanic box on apps a year ago. |
Ok, and what is the point a "POC" category in reality? I understand a category such as African American--people who's ancestors were enslaved, they are a special category of people in the United States. American Indians, a distinct ethnicity that is also part of the social fabric of the United States. These are examples of ethnic groups. The other what you call brown people are of immigrant descent. Why should they be grouped with African Americans in American Indians in any meaningful way to form a random, useless category called "POC"? |

North Carolina resident here who is also a hiring manager and sees a lot of resumes from all the area schools.
I understand what OP’s daughter means. It’s the type of white at WF that stands out, not the percentage. It’s country club, Tory Burch flats, blond highlights, mom and grammy were both debutantes, really rich southern white. Some of the other schools name checked in this chat are just as white when looking at percentages on paper, but the white students at those schools have pink hair and nose rings. This is neither a slam on WF or a credit to the other schools, btw - just an observation. And I’ve known both very bright WF grads and boring, dim ones. YMMV. |
| OP is this perhaps more about the south than anything else? Have you only looked at northeast schools and this was the furthest south you’ve gone? |
UVA was sort of like this in the 90s, with subset of well dressed black folk (we use to say that UVA had a mini HBCU in the middle) |
OP here. Yes! This is it more than anything. Let me illustrate this in pictures. There were truly a lot of white kids but more than that, all the white kids were super preppy. That was actually the main point of my post. In pictures (because I recently learned how to post pictures on here
Typical college student cross section. Note the mix of random tees, jeans, sweatshirts, etc.
Wake kids as far as they eye could see:
Now, there is an element of this in every DMV high school. And quite a concentration of it in certain schools, especially certain privates. BUT there is no school here (even the privates---of which I am well acquainted) where this is the overwhelming, predominant culture. ---Where you have to look really hard to find someone wearing a sweatshirt and jeans to class. We've been to Emory and Vanderbilt and Duke and those are all far more diverse. Not just in ethnicity but also in dress and style. Wake was just super, super preppy (and white) but honestly it was the prep that stood out the most. Now you may look at these picture and think "what the heck is wrong with a sea of those beautiful preppy girls and boys?" Well, honestly nothing. That scene is likely nirvana to many kids. And that is great. Moving on.... |
| What school is that top school? It seems appealing.. |
