OP here.  Yes!  This is it more than anything.

Let me illustrate this in pictures.  There were truly a lot of white kids but more than that, all the white kids were super preppy.  That was actually the main point of my post. 
In pictures (because I recently learned how to post pictures on here:)

Typical college student cross section.  Note the mix of random tees, jeans, sweatshirts, etc.

Now, there is an element of this in every DMV high school.  And quite a concentration of it in certain schools, especially certain privates.  BUT there is no school here (even the privates---of which I am well acquainted) where this is the overwhelming, predominant culture.
---Where you have to look really hard to find someone wearing a sweatshirt and jeans to class. 
We've been to Emory and Vanderbilt and Duke and those are all far more diverse.  Not just in ethnicity but also in dress and style. 
Wake was just super, super preppy  (and white) but honestly it was the prep that stood out the most.

Now you may look at these picture and think "what the heck is wrong with a sea of those beautiful preppy girls and boys?"  Well, honestly nothing.  That scene is likely nirvana to many kids. 
And that is great.
