Yeah, we get “income inequality” is to blame, but at the same time, we throw millions at it, and leniency, or studies, or is not an immediate solution to the massive spike. We need to vote for strict on crime politicians and people who have the will to let police arrest and courts prosecute. If not, the crime will keep rising.

I mean, you fundamentally understand that strict on crime policing got us into this mess, right?

And I mean, you fundamentally understand you are completely full of it, right?

Yeah, creating a food desert for the vast majority of residents who are just trying to live there because of several individuals who are running product scam operations would just be hilarious... Are you insane?

F em

Just open food panties and give poor people the basics. No Cheetos. No Pepsi. Just fruit and veggies and pasta.

They aren't stealing those items. They are stealing items with a resale value to support their drug habit.

It did not. The entire crime narrative has been a false binary since George Floyd's murder. It's a much more complex issue. The recent response to overly burdensome criminal sentencing, etc. is to make it so lax that there are few consequences. The appropriate response would be immediate, known, reasonable consequences to criminal activity. That's the only way to build in a deterrent.

And there has to be a deterrent. Most crime is opportunistic. Most lower income people don't commit crime, but we all love to think if we provide handouts, crime will go away. Provide handouts and services because it's the right thing to do. But never expect it to reduce crime.

Everybody everywhere is already affected. Thieves drive prices up for everyone, everywhere.

CVS McLean and Great Falls have been hit, and had to take measures. No one is immune from this BS.

Yes it does. And the good people of the neighborhood should be hopping mad that thieves among them are causing this to happen.

Only the people living there can fix this.

What do those people do? Seriously? What do you propose? If you're Mrs. Smith who has lived there for 40 years and you don't steal, what is your responsibility? Are you required to set up a brute squad?

Identify the thieves to Giant security and DC police for starters.
Shame the thieves in their own community.
Shutdown resales of stolen items in next door nail salon.

YOu know the thieves are dressed in such a way to prevent identification?

When prices start rising at Giant, remember it’s for subsidizing all of these new security measures.

Oh no, *those* residents matter. They can get the attention of their local police to set up and do something. Actually, this already happened, when the CVS's in Chevy Chase and Palisades were being hit and the residents flipped out until the cops posted cars at each one. Wonder why that doesn't happen in SE?

Those neighborhoods are already over policed.

As someone who lives in one of those neighborhoods, I'm perfectly fine with the level of policing we have. Of course, neither I nor my family are criminals.

You know, if income inequality wasn’t at the horrific state it is today, these things wouldn’t be such an issue.

Let's stipulate that this is true - income equality is in large part responsible for this type of crime (along with other societal ills).

So what? Should we just throw up our hands and allow it? Just fail to enforce all laws?

In any event, this is not Jean Valjean stealing a loaf of bread so his adopted daughter can eat.

What a load of bull.

Income inequality is a real thing, but these thefts and crime mobs are not just so people can put food on the table or be able to wash their dirty clothes. They're to buy drugs, or to buy stupid materialistic crap, or to fit in with their degenerate peer group.
