Kiawah Island

What’s better thank Kiawah? Genuine question- we enjoy Kiawah but are also looking for recommendations for other beach locations with good amenities. Thanks

We went several times when I was a kid and it was beautiful. It’s fast enough south to have alligators. If you have young children, be sure your house isn’t near a pond. We had one trip where our parents made us run in and out of the house because they thought the gator was looking at my younger sibling. I used to find this story hilarious, but after the gator attacked the child at Disney, it’s clearly worth a passing mention. I’d take my preschooler, FWIW, but we’d start at the beach.

We have two par threes holes on our property, a bocci court, a tennis court, about half a soccer field, are members of Westmoor(tennis) and Sankaty (golf), have horses and a good sized fishing boat. We stay very, very busy Phones get checked as kids and grandkids clean up for dinner, that is about it.

It is heaven for people who love it.

This is all true. Like it or not, take it or leave it. On Kiawah, you don’t see a bunch of kids on devices and needing to be entertained 24/7. The culture of these families is spending a lot of family time together doing things “off the grid“.
You see many multi generational families, enjoying their time together. You see older teenagers, having fun on the beach or in the pool, not sulking in a device on their towel. It’s a place to go and chill and reset and that’s important for kids and teens too. With all that said, I recognize not everyone is down for that lifestyle.

You don’t think people do all of this in places with nicer weather and much better amenities?

ITT: “amenities” = go-karts, fried dough, ticky-tacky boardwalks, nightclubs in the vein of “Seacrets”

Why do people feel the need to defend their vacation choices? When I find a nice, relatively uncrowded vacation spot, I am definitely not trying to convince others why it is so great! We definitely don't need more northerners coming down to Kiawah. They can have "the Cape" all to themselves!

That sounds nice. You seem nicely insulated from the wannabes who visit Nantucket

Wild dunes on Isle of Palm is great. Easy access to Charleston, Sullivans island and other spots for restaurants and shopping.

Been here for generations with other families who have been here for generations and sell the Hamptons to everyone we meet from NYC and Conn. They will stop coming one day and we won’t (or my descendants wont)…we are presently working on raising money for regular people to be able to buy houses so it goes back to how it was. Glam is not the goal. A great family destination is.

Kiawah without cars and more relaxed is Bald Head Island. Because it's ferry-access only (no cars), it's quiet and safe for kids to run and bike around freely -- showing up mostly for meals.

80% of the island is a wild life conservancy and gorgeous. The homes are pretty -- no boxes on stilts except for a small patch built 30 years ago. No big ostentatious monstrosities. (Though they build something like that to film Weekend at Bernies on the island in the 80s, they tore it down after.). Everything else is a southern version of Nantucket. Two clubs (one with golf/tennis/croquet), a market, a chapel, and a few restaurants -- but that's it. Nightlife is potluck on the beach or trivia night at the club, so not for everyone but it's a family paradise.

We used to go to Nantucket but it's become so over-touristed that we stopped years ago. And unlike Nantucket, we can swim and enjoy the beach 6 months instead of 2-3. Sandy beaches on 3 sides of the island (marshland on the 4th where you can kayak), so it's easy to find your private own stretch of beach. DC seems to have discovered BHI because we keep running into acquaintances. Which I enjoy, so come on down.

Of course there is better weather. It’s way too hot there in the summer. And regarding amenities, there are places with much better restaurants, golf courses, tennis clubs, yacht clubs, housing, museums, less people, etc etc etc. if you don’t know, you better ask somebody.

So why again exactly are you hanging out on a thread about Kiawah island just so you can diss it? Have you ever even been? Highly doubt it.

It gets hot in the summertime everywhere. Want a cool summer destination? Hit up Iceland - a DCUM favorite.

Better golf? It is good enough for the Ryder Cup. Tennis? Fewer people? Sounds like you have never visited.

There’s a wide range of housing, from condos to multi-million dollar mansions.

Plenty of excellent restaurants and museums nearby in Charleston

I don’t know anyone who associates Nantucket (or Kiawah) with “glam”
