So you don’t golf, play tennis, ride bikes, paddle board, etc?

DP. I thought it was boring, too. Many better beach areas with more to do.

There are dozens of activities offered by the Kiawah resort daily in addition to golf and tennis (kids camps, nature exploration excursions, shelling, surfing, paddle boarding, basketball 3-3 tournaments, sand castle contests, arts and crafts, archery, etc). Biking is huge in kiawah too. But if you’re the type that needs souvenir shops, bars, mini golf, go carts, etc Kiawah wont be your jam.

It just sounds gross to be going there from June-Sept and I can’t imagine it being exclusive at all during that time.

Fishers Island, Sconset, Old Newport yes, decamping to sweatville with mosquitos and mobs, absolutely not.

Mobs? Clearly you’ve never been to Kiawah. There’s a limit to the number of people on island at any given time. It never feels crowded even at peak season.

Of course I have never been there in the summer. Played some golf in the fall and that is it. There are 4 other families in total on my New England beach right now and it’s 70 degrees and perfect. That is why my street is known as “Billionaires row.” There are about 50 houses along a few mile stretch. The weather is awesome, the crowds are minuscule, and the setting is perfect.

Not true. It’s full of old money southerners in the summers. When I was in college I was regularly a vacation nanny for one such family and it was full of other similar families.

There is no old money in the South. “Bless your heart” as y’all might say.

Agree, boring and full of boomers. I wouldn’t call it pretentious, just very blah.

And your water is cold, choppy, shark infested, and the sand, if there is something other than rocks, is ugly.

PP here - What does that have to do with anything? You can do all of those activities anywhere. Kiawah is boring It just is! But also notice that I said that sometimes boring is what one needs.

70 at the beach? No thanks. Bring on the heat.

I don’t think it’s pretentious at all because people pretty much keep to themselves. It’s not like the Hamptons where there is a bit of a social scene with people dressed to impress, etc. There isn’t much of a social scene at all unless you are talking about people in private homes hosting their own events. It’s a very laid back and relaxing place, a nice mixture of nature preserve and beach/golf courses. The beaches are fairly private, and the main activities are at the resort (tennis, golf, dining), paddle boarding, swimming, biking, kayaking. It’s not for everyone - there’s swampy lagoons with gators, and a lack of family oriented activities like go karts, movie theater, boardwalk games or mini golf. Charleston is about a 50 minute drive away if you are interested in a city break during your stay (dining, aquarium, museums, historical sights). However, if Charleston is a draw and you want to get in and out more easily, Isle of Palms would be a better choice…Kiawah is pretty far removed.

If it’s only 70 degrees on the beach, surely the water is way too cold to swim! That’s not my idea of a beach vacation.
