80% of the island is a wild life conservancy and gorgeous.  The homes are pretty -- no boxes on stilts except for a small patch built 30 years ago.  No big ostentatious monstrosities.  (Though they build something like that to film Weekend at Bernies on the island in the 80s, they tore it down after.).  Everything else is a southern version of Nantucket.  Two clubs (one with golf/tennis/croquet), a market, a chapel, and a few restaurants -- but that's it.  Nightlife is potluck on the beach or trivia night at the club, so not for everyone but it's a family paradise.

We used to go to Nantucket but it's become so over-touristed that we stopped years ago.  And unlike Nantucket, we can swim and enjoy the beach 6 months instead of 2-3.  Sandy beaches on 3 sides of the island (marshland on the 4th where you can kayak), so it's easy to find your private own stretch of beach.  DC seems to have discovered BHI because we keep running into acquaintances.  Which I enjoy, so come on down. [/quote]
