Kiawah Island

Anonymous
We visited for a week during spring break and I did not find it too pretentious. The island is very pretty and the beaches are nice. We also enjoyed Night Heron pool but agree with other posters that there are not a ton of things to do there. The golf is awesome, especially the Ocean Course, but it is ungodly expensive. It's a nice spot for a laid back vacation. Not sure I'd go in the summer given the weather but understand that some people like the heat and humidity.

So you don’t golf, play tennis, ride bikes, paddle board, etc?

Most of that is boring to kids and teens, and even the fun activities will only last an hour or so.

Kiawah is a boring place in the middle of nowhere. It’s a 50–minute drive from Charleston so not close enough to count on consistent entertainment there.

I would only visit there with really young kids under 8 years old. Tweens and teens and young adults will be bored to tears. There are many better beach towns to visit.

I’m confused by people saying tweens and teens are bored. What exactly are you all doing on your beach vacations? When we go, it’s relaxing by the pool or at the beach. We punctuate it with dining out occasionally although we also like to grill on the patio.

Isn’t relaxing at the beach the whole point of a beach vacation?

It just sounds gross to be going there from June-Sept and I can’t imagine it being exclusive at all during that time.

Fishers Island, Sconset, Old Newport yes, decamping to sweatville with mosquitos and mobs, absolutely not.

Mobs? Clearly you’ve never been to Kiawah. There’s a limit to the number of people on island at any given time. It never feels crowded even at peak season.

Of course I have never been there in the summer. Played some golf in the fall and that is it. There are 4 other families in total on my New England beach right now and it’s 70 degrees and perfect. That is why my street is known as “Billionaires row.” There are about 50 houses along a few mile stretch. The weather is awesome, the crowds are minuscule, and the setting is perfect.

And your water is cold, choppy, shark infested, and the sand, if there is something other than rocks, is ugly.

None of those things are true. Zero. Not on our beach. You know nothing.

Not true. It’s full of old money southerners in the summers. When I was in college I was regularly a vacation nanny for one such family and it was full of other similar families.

There is no old money in the South. “Bless your heart” as y’all might say.

Bwahahahaha. Mmmmkay.

Is 1880 old to you? 1900? Silly. You live in a small, small world.

If that’s all your family does on your beach trips, and you have teens or tweens, I bet they sit with their face in their phones all day. That sounds so boring. Zzzzzz

+100

More go-karts, boardwalks, fried food and stores selling pool/beach toys every 50 feet

Ocean City is definitely the best place to go!

It’s 70 degrees outside your billionaire row beach getaway. What’s the water temp?

Yesterday was 84 with a generous breeze (5-10 mph). Gorgeous.

We love active vacations, but our beach week just isn’t when we do it. There’s nothing wrong with napping or reading at the beach. As you know tweens/teens are super active these days with college prep and extracurriculars - sometimes they want to chill!

You’d like the Jersey shore.

You don’t seem very well educated. Virginia was settled by British colonists in the 17th century.

Talk about pretentious...

What do teens do in Kiawah? We’ve been here for a week and I’ve seen teens playing bocce with their families, throwing the football, throwing balls in the water, riding bikes, fishing, playing Marco Polo in the pool, boogie boarding, and just hanging out in the water. When you don’t throw devices and constant entertainment in their laps, they make their own fun. They figure it out.

It was 70 degrees today. Perfect for me and not the 85-90 bathwater in SC.
