Will no longer shop at Giant- annoying checkout machine

I've seen people do this but never figured out how it works exactly. Can someone explain it in more detail?

You scan your Giant card when you pick up the scanner. Then you scan (and bag) your groceries while you shop around the store. When you're ready to check out, you push a button on the scanner and it pops up a barcode that you then scan at the self-checkout. It pulls your whole order up on the screen quickly and you proceed to pay as normal. It's super easy.

Love self scan. Haven’t done regular checkout at Giant in several years.

I was at the McLean self checkout yesterday, and they have about 12 self checkouts. They were all so loud and calling out each item scanned. I don’t have sensory issues, but I would go insane working there.

I don’t even like giant and I go there all the time for the self scan. So fast unless it’s random audit day.

I’m really over this everywhere. Companies keep finding more ways to put the burden of service onto customers while simultaneously increasing prices.

Just left there. Check out station light blinking and employee checking his phone and perusing the candy….and stop asking me to donate. They literally do nothing on your behalf but they want to donate your money to someone else, on your behalf.

NP here and the opposite - I am shopping elsewhere now. Eff that. I would feel differently if the electronic canner wasn't so accusatory.

Meanwhile, the person before me leaves without paying and the self checkout is waiting for payment. What a cluster.

Do you have to weigh your filled bags at the end to make sure they correspond to what you scanned?

I feel really sorry for the workers there. I’m sure they must hate the new checkout machines too!

Can you explain what “random audit” means?

Next thing you know, they’ll be asking us to leave a tip!

No the cashiers have to do random checks of 7 items in your cart to make sure they have been scanned from time to time. I am not sure what they really accomplishes when people feel free to walk out without paying though.

They check everything in your cart. Given how long it takes, I would just leave once I was flagged

Anonymous wrote:Yes somehow the Safeway self check out works better. More sensitive label scanner for produce in bags and doesn't constantly remind you to put the items in the bags.

They recently updated theirs (at least where I live). You no longer have to weigh your bags and you can scan with the wand directly in your cart/bag. If I have a small amount I just shop directly into my bag and then use the scanner without even taking the items out.

The checkout attendant told me-I'm there a lot.

I hate someone else bagging my groceries. I love the hand scanner. Bag it the way I like it as I go and then scan the code, Apple Pay and out the door. You all sound like a bunch of old women and I’m 52!

I agree op we stopped going there a few weeks ago when they did this and also blocked the doors going in and out it's a total fire hazard and horrible inconvenient to walk all the way around to the other doors clear across the massive store.
