I’m done shopping at Giant Food. I’m fed up with their checkout process. The checkout lanes that have cashiers are too slow and long. The self-checkout lanes are now “20 items or less.” And the few regular self-checkout machines are so ridiculously annoying. The machine is constantly telling me to place the item in the checkout area when it’s already there! I’m done. |
Are you referring to Silver Spring/EW Highway? Or is this now a problem all Giants? I had the same immediate reaction. My workaround is to grab a self-scanner by the produce section and use that. I often have more than 20 items but no one has ever confronted me because the check-out with a self-scanner is so quick. Anyway, OP, just want to say I empathize. |
+1 This happens when the machine gets ahead of you. But when you get ahead of the machine, it thinks you stole the item, and it asks you to put it back on the scale. You can't win. |
I shop regularly at the cabin john giant and they used to have the best self checkout. unlike other giants, they did not have the weight thing enabled, so it would never scold you for not scanning an item and everything moved quickly and seamlessly through. now with their new 20 item restriction, i guess the turned on the weight sensor and it's constantly telling you that you didn't scan something and it's so annoying. the regular check out lines are too long and I'm way faster scanning my own items and if I need to a large haul for the family, then I have to suck it up and wait in their ridiculously long check out lines. it is very annoying-agree with you OP. |
I love the self scanner too. I do not think the 20 item limit applies since you have already scanned the foods. I have gotten double checked 2 times in the last month so maybe they are doing that more. |
"Please place your bags in the checkout area"
(places 2 very lightweight bags) "Please remove unscanned item from checkout area" (removes bags) "Please place your bags in the checkout area" (places 2 very lightweight bags) "Please remove unscanned item from checkout area" ** rinse, repeat until help arrives ** |
NP. I've been having this problem at the Arliss Road/Flower one, which doesn't have the scanners unfortunately. A real pain. |
A sign at our local Giant said that the system updates are due to recent increased thefts so I believe the changes are at all Giants.
+1 you can avoid these problems by using the scanner |
OP here. So it seems it’s not just me who is annoyed with the new system! I’ll try the portable scanner thingy PP mentioned but honestly I just want to go elsewhere at this point. |
OP again. I usually go to the McLean Giant so it sounds like this is happening at all DMV Giants. |
It's happening everywhere. I was at a Harris Teeter not in the DC Metro area last week and I messed up scanning bags of goldfish. The system showed me a video of myself, scanning two bags, looking confused, rescanning one of the bags, pushing the machine and then the lady coming over to help. The self check machines all suck. |
This is how my interactions always go:
Me: scans a lemon and puts it in the bag Machine: place item in bagging area Me: moves it around so machine registers it Machine: remove unscanned item from bagging area Me: takes out lemon and puts it back in Machine: !!! HELP IS ON THE WAY !!! |
To top it off, we are carrying out a task they used to pay employees to do! |
True! But I feel bad for the staff who are constantly running around trying to fix the annoying issues! |
Same experience at Wegmans - I think they got some new technology to cut down on theft but its SUPER annoying. I don't even want to go into details but there's like 3 things that go wrong every time.... I know first world problem |
