Suuuure. And admitting to listening to your police scanner is just, yikes. Sad. |
You're like the people who hated the printing press. Darn that Gutenberg fella. |
This is assuming the employees are speedy. As seen at the McLean Lidl and other stores, that's decidedly false. |
I saw someone get busted at Harris Teeter last week. |
Why am I ridiculous? The express checkout lanes are for people with "20 items or less" items. Why are people with only 1-2 items clogging the regular self-checkout lanes? Oh and there are only TWO regular checkout lanes in my Giant versus at least ten of the express checkout machines. |
The Target self scan is so much easier. I bring my own bags and can leave them in the cart and put my scanned items directly into bag after scanning. It’s lovely. |
My biggest pet peeve is places that coverted 75% of their lines to self-checkout but half of the self-checkouts are "out of service" at any given time. Defeats the point. If the line for self-checkout is as long as the cashier line, I'm waiting for the cashier just to make a point. |
Not really, no. Only times I really see checkers being faster are at Aldi where they literally throw the groceries as they scan. |
Part of problem is worker shortage — so they need to up their pay. |
+1 I find myself cursing out these machines, yet I still continue using them. It's (usually) so much faster than a cashier. But for the love of God, I wish they would figure out how to stop this incredibly annoying pattern. |
I think they have the best self checkouts, but the 15 or 20 item limit really sucks. Most people in a household of >1 person are going to need to buy more than that. I used to be a loyal customer but I've stopped shopping there. (When I shop, there's never more than one cashier and the line is long, while the self check line is empty.) |
I hate Giant. It's soooo bad. I only go there if I'm really desperate

I too get annoyed by the “please put your item in the bagging area” refrain when I’ve already done so, but I try to keep it entertaining by talking to the machine explaining my case, trying to have a new retort ready for each subsequent scanned item. Still beats waiting for human checkout, they’re too slow (except at Trader Joe’s, who actually seem to care about checking and bagging expertly). I tend to avoid stores that don’t have self-checkout (or don’t accept Apple Pay, though that’s less and less of an issue over time). |
Have you all seen Chinese women cashiers in Chinese grocery stores bagging groceries? Now, talk about speed and efficiency! Why can't cashiers in American grocery stores learn the same skill? They are so slow compared to the Chinese. |
