Travel on Social Media

If not travel, what do you post on social media?

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. It depends on how many photos I need to sort through and how quickly we need to get back to reality. Also sine having kids I started sharing some photos in a Google album with family because the grandparents aren't on social media. So often that takes priority. But I generally enjoy seeing others; travel photos! It can be a good source of inspiration too.

Yes I like to see friends and family's travel photos. Bonus is if they curate them well and provide historical context (for certain destinations) and other pertinent info. I don't travel as much these days and like to live vicariously through other people's travels. Plus I just enjoy seeing friends and family having a grand old time.

I love seeing pictures like this. I have no desire to go to Europe, etc. (I travel internationally for work and prefer national parks and hiking for my vacations), but I love living vicariously through others. Sure, you can read the Wikipedia article, but it's enlightening to see Paris through the eyes of a friend's 14 year old.

Yes and yes.

Eg I went to Slovenia after seeing a friend's pics and also included certain places in Arizona based on another's. I also know some of my friends have been inspired to visit places I have posted about. But I don't post pics from a regular trip to Rehoboth or NY etc. And I also understand why some people might think this is obnoxious.

+1. My day to day life is pretty boring and I feel great joy when I travel. I edit down the pics to just a few. I’ve also gotten inspired by other friends’ travel posts. I’m not posting daily 60-pic daily albums of my third trip to Disney or anything like that.

This! Though I'll admit to posting a snapshot of every beach I visit, mundane Rehoboth or not.

I’m happy for my friends and family when they’re having fun

Yes I post travel pics. Yes I love friends travel pics. I even look at travel pics of friends of friends.

All of my relatives live overseas, so they'd be more interested in photos of the Potomac or the Mall or the supermarket or Halloween than of Paris or Hawaii. That being said, I avoid social media these days.

I enjoy seeing travel pics from friends.

The only thing I don't like is if they post 20 photos of every single day of a 5 day trip or something. A couple of photos a day, sure. Or a bunch afterwards in one post is fine.

Did you grow up rich? This point of view of not sharing travels with friends and family is foreign to me. So I’m genuinely curious if it’s because you grew up rich and were taught not to brag.

Also curious about if you take photos who traveling at all. Do you ever look at them? Do you make personal print albums for yourself? What if someone asks to see them — do you make an exception?

Yes to both of your questions. Photos are taken sparingly and for personal use only.

I don’t think there is anything superior about taking few pictures. It’s the sharing that is obnoxious.

This person grew up in Ohio but now has a nice home in Bethesda and is play-acting as a Vanderbilt or something. It is complete nonsense that wealthy people only take pictures sparingly and never ever show them to anyone else.

And you would be wrong. We are in Europe now actually (have been for weeks) and haven’t shared a single photo.

You’re in Europe but hanging out on DCUM? Who’s the gauche one now

We’ve been here for many weeks, it’s not really a big deal.

Agree. I don’t need or want a step by step of each day, but a few highlight shots are great. I post occasional travel photos – because that’s what’s going on in my life at that time. I’m not taking pics of food or lodgings or shopping hauls or anything try-hard. My social media is for friends and family who are (allegedly) interested. I’m not holding anyone hostage and forcing them to view all 14 slide carousels from my 3 day trip to Ocean City.

Not bragging, just stating that we aren’t sharing photos, which is the topic of this thread. Plus anonymity makes all the difference. If you posted your photos anonymously, I would think you were gauche.
