They had a photographer with them to film them for this documentary so it is them but not candid - they know they are in front of a camera lens and therefore what they do and say is under the context of knowingly being filmed for a documentary about themselves.

I don't get how they allege quitting RF for privacy from the public, presumably from being photo'd, filmed, and in the news. But then they do an entire series of themselves to all the public, in photos and film and its all over the news, their supposed candid life. On camera. It's like their career now.

^This.

Maybe b/c they want to highlight the insanity of the Royal Family?
Maybe because they want to point out the horrors of Colonialism?
Perhaps they want to use their platform to fight against the blatant racism in England?
Or, could it be that they see an opportunity to call to task the despicable behavior of the British press that killed Harry’s Mum?

Take your pick!

or as simple as they want to make money on their terms versus be on a controlled allowance from a family they don't want to be close to?

Harry was mad they were cut off financially and called Charles about sending them money. Charles sent them money and gave them a lump sum for the first while after they left but then eventually cut them off. They would have been happy to keep on taking family money if they could have gotten access to it. THey left with quite a bit of money.

That dirty colonial imperialist money buys them some nice stuff.

A California castle that they cannot afford in the style to which they want to be accustomed.

One thing I found interesting was James Holt’s explanation in episode 1 about why the royal family tolerates and actually works to feed the British press with constant content. He said that the monarchy is such an antiquated institution and if they don’t keep themselves beloved and relevant, the British people will essentially realize they don’t need it.

It makes sense, but I never thought of it like that. That it’s not just undying love of the British people for tradition; it’s the institution basically marketing themselves on a daily basis so that they can keep they status, lands, money, etc.

Isn't that true for most famous people? And definitely true for Harry and Meghan. They call the paps on themselves, release stories on themselves, create projects about themselves, take and sell or share pictures and tidbits. That is how most people stay famous and keep their money and stuff - especially those that are famous for being famous like H and M and the Kardashian brood and Paris Hilton types.

I don't think the monarchy needs press to keep its wealth. It has a massive real estate portfolio and various trusts and investments that would keep them all wealthy even if no one spoke of them ever again.
Of course it’s true for famous people. But do you want your marketing to be handled by an institution that doesn’t particularly care about you or would you want to market yourself? Regardless, I found his perspective interesting as I never really looked at the Royals as having to market themselves in order to maintain their institution. You’re free to disagree with him.

Same!

It’s getting absolutely glowing reviews. I’m going to binge this first release over the weekend. Can’t wait. The pics I’ve seen look wonderful.

It’s really nicely produced, albeit a smidge boring. I think the knives will come out in the second part.

Does she know this isn’t a screenplay. The Royal Family will survive and win.

He reached out to her first! Made me really think about how much we thought we knew about them vs gossip we assume is news.

There is a video from them in 2017 talking about how they met and they tell a different version of how they met than what they tell in this one. Both videos are them telling their own story but they changed the details so who knows if they were telling the truth in 2017 or now.

Yeah, their stories always change. Remember when she said he proposed while she was making a chicken dinner in his apartment at KP? Now they say it happened on the KP grounds.

I find it all really sad.

I felt that way too, like this boring harmless series will change significantly in the second part. Otherwise it is so boring, where is the money in that?

Because they want to control the narrative of their own lives. Sure, she can come across as overly precious, but these three episodes made them far more likable to me. Staying in that RF life would have felt like a grueling uphill battle every damn day.

You do realize they wanted this series to make them look a certain way. The RF could also release a series that made them all look very likeable. This series is more PR.

No doubt. It's glossy and effective PR. I just can't help but wonder if M was being continually set up to fail alongside the ever perfect Kate. I'm surprised that I'm even saying this because I'm not a true fan.

Also not a big fan, but think there is an element of truth here. She's much more modern and showed up ready to WORK. Also much more comfortable speaking and being in front of the public. I think there was an effort to make sure she didn't outshine Kate.

Drunk driver plus not wearing your seat belt killed Diana. But don't let facts get in your way.

DP. There’s no crash without the car chase. Maybe the same thing would’ve happened at a different time but the paparazzi’s role was integral. And didn’t they also block first responders?

I think most of us never got the full scope of how the racist tabloids and outlets in the UK went after her. I don't think people would even believe it. The racist stuff here is overt in action, but it's supressed in print, unless you are on alternative or underground sites. There, it's literally ok to be racist everywhere.

Secondly, she was literally sold out by her own family, which outside of anything going on in Britain, was the worst. Yes, she had reason to go on the brink. Her father and half sister and half brother are just scum bags, which is bad enough even when you aren't married into this royal system.

In the next series, we will see how she was set up by palace aides. It was never going to work out there.

Seeking attention? No, they are earning money with projects, and yes, they probably needed to have their full turn and this wzs well done so far. Having said that, the Oprah interview was a huge mistake.

When she talked about how she realized Will and Kate were very formal both inside and outside, I laughed. I can totally see that. She said she met them barefoot wearing jeans thinking they could all relax and be themselves behind closed doors, but that wasn’t true for Will and Kate. But it very much seems to be how Harry and his close friends are. They have plenty of photos and videos of them with Harry’s friends acting normal. Sometimes you just fit better with the family you choose, not the one you’re born into.

It was a brilliant PR move. Now that Harry and Meghan have used his royal stature to make money in the US, they do not need the royal family for their identity or money. They are establishing themselves in the upper ranges of US wealth and philanthropy and do not the BRF.

As Harry said, he was raised by his Lesotho AIDS charity and the military. The only parent that mattered to him was his mother, and he has no need for his father nor the rest of his birth family. He now has his family of choice and is welll rid of them.

Inadvertently, he gave the BRF a means to reduce the monarchy as Charles said he wanted to do. Parliament is only too willing to cooperate in reducing funding that will result in natural decreases.

The Americans have embraced Harry and Meghan and they need nothing more.

Im sorry but I didnt buy this for a second. If you are meeting your future brother in law, and he is Prince William in particular, you put pants on without holes in them. And you wear shoes. When I met my future in laws I put untorn clothes on and wore shoes and they are "commoners". This is bs, she is just making fun of them.

“Overly precious”. — you nailed it, PP. I’ve been trying to put my finger on what it is about her, and that’s a perfect description!

I thought the PP who called it big Anne Hathaway energy was spot on too. That one made me chuckle.

It was sweet when Meghan thought her life would be like Anne Hathaway’s “The Princess Diaries.”

This is just nonsense. You would choose to be more formal, therefore she must be lying.
