I was surprised by the story of how they met (on instagram, with text from early emails and dms) given how different it was from all the books/stories (Meghan going to UK on mission to meet a rich man). He reached out to her first! Made me really think about how much we thought we knew about them vs gossip we assume is news.

Pretty much all the press pics / videos and all the online headlines were unrelated to them but editorial liberty to make a point.

There is a video from them in 2017 talking about how they met and they tell a different version of how they met than what they tell in this one. Both videos are them telling their own story but they changed the details so who knows if they were telling the truth in 2017 or now.

The trailer alone had 3 images that were from stock images of paparazzi that had nothing to do with the Sussexes, plus one image that implied that they were being stalked where the positioning of the photographer had prior approval. They don’t seem to care about credibility. It will be interesting to see how many points of contention are in the actual video.

I’m watching and liking it. I’m not a Royal-watcher and have read just the basics about them. One thing I found interesting was James Holt’s explanation in episode 1 about why the royal family tolerates and actually works to feed the British press with constant content. He said that the monarchy is such an antiquated institution and if they don’t keep themselves beloved and relevant, the British people will essentially realize they don’t need it.

It makes sense, but I never thought of it like that. That it’s not just undying love of the British people for tradition; it’s the institution basically marketing themselves on a daily basis so that they can keep they status, lands, money, etc.

Isn't that true for most famous people? And definitely true for Harry and Meghan. They call the paps on themselves, release stories on themselves, create projects about themselves, take and sell or share pictures and tidbits. That is how most people stay famous and keep their money and stuff - especially those that are famous for being famous like H and M and the Kardashian brood and Paris Hilton types.

I don't think the monarchy needs press to keep its wealth. It has a massive real estate portfolio and various trusts and investments that would keep them all wealthy even if no one spoke of them ever again.

Did you catch any of the Queen’s funeral? I don’t think people waited in line for over 8 hours to pay their respects because of marketing.

They had a photographer with them to film them for this documentary so it is them but not candid - they know they are in front of a camera lens and therefore what they do and say is under the context of knowingly being filmed for a documentary about themselves.

Back then they always just said “through mutual friends.” I don’t recall real details and then all the press and books talk about it being a set up at soho house or whatever that club is called. But the two of them say today they arranged the meet themselves after being connected by friends, with Harry making the first move. Very different than social climbing Meghan
