What you think and what the laws are are entirely different. You are ignorant. |
I work in a large school system and understand FERPA, FAPE, etc. Many special ed students are handled with kid gloves when it comes to punishment and consequences. There are high school kids who return to public school settings from residential treatment centers, and very few educators know about their violent pasts (and certainly not the other parents in the school). |
Yes, we understand that violent behavior is kept under wraps frequently. |
and at times saying that the incident happened will identify the student. All students have privacy rights and the school system has to be very careful about sharing anything. |
I'm a teacher and if a 6th grader assaulted me I'd absolutely BOTH file charges with the police and I'd sue the hell out of my school district for not protecting me. In 6th grade, the student is likely 12-13 years old, though could be older. A 12 or 13 year old is probably as big as I am. I don't care if the student has an IEP or is 12 years old. When we say it is okay for a kid to attack a teacher, we're lost.
I teach kindergarten and am regularly hit, kicked or otherwise treated badly by 5 year olds. This is a little bit of a different situation. However, if I am ever injured, as in blood is drawn or have to go to the ER or hell, even have a bruise? I will work with my union to get the child removed from my class. If the district won't do that, I'll sue. I have a right to be safe at school. Period. I have a right to be safe at school. |
No, you are brainwashed on what FERPA requires. |
Translation= the PP was right. |
You do have the right to be safe at school and so do kids. Last year, when kids were posting videos on Instagram of the violence at GWMS (which I thought was a cry for help and private school kids were watching as entertainment) - teachers were throwing themselves between kids that were much bigger than the teachers. Teachers deserve better. I'm glad you would take this hard line. |
Agree I’d file a police report if a sixth grader broke my nose |
Exactly. Which is why ACPS errs on the side of saying absolutely nothing at all at all times no matter the event. Seems reasonable. |
Thankfully he is heading off to Prince William County. Mrs. Vinson will be in charge until someone new is hired. Glad I don't have to read his rambling emails ever again!! |
Who can blame him for abandoning ship? I wonder if he'll tell kids in PW County that it's their fault if their property is stolen? |
As a parent, l 100% support this and think that all teachers should do the same. |
That’s fine but that doesn’t mean the information would be made public or that you could make public systems violating a minor’s privacy rights. I thought OP’s issue was how to find more information about an incident and unfortunately there isn’t a mechanism for that under the circumstances. |
This absolutely happened. My daughter witnessed it and the teacher involved is someone with whom she regularly interacts. |
