As in, do the virtual tour even if the kid did the in person tour? |
He has AP World Lang and AP Calc AB, not BC... |
Those numbers are the kids who attended right? Not those who were accepted. |

On the Saturday evening AmTrak from Williamsburg (1 block from campus) to Alexandria (AKA, the Hogworts Express), the Conductor announced a welcome home the 450 W& M students they were dropping off. Kids also came home Friday evening, Sat am, and there were two trains Sunday. And, of course, some kids drove and some were picked up.
Contrast this with 35 kids a year from MoCo. |
Correct 66 that is number attending, and yield rate for OOS is 18% per the SCHEV link posted earlier, so presumably many more MD kids were admitted - probably double or triple. Nobody is saying an acceptance is a done deal but stats look good to me - certainly worth pursuing if kid likes W&M. |
Yes, but— a decent percent we’re accepted ED, where accepted = attended. |
IF OP has more questions, don't mean to stop conversation, but it feels like we have reached the "agree to disagree" part of the program and are opinions don't really matter (unless there is an AO on here).
I would bet kid will be admitted but I readily admit I am speculating without complete information (full application). Please report back in March! Good luck to your student. Sounds like he worked hard throughout HS and I wish him to the best. |
*our (sorry typing too quickly) |
They are certainly good enough, but just like those stats are good enough for Harvard, that doesn't mean that the student will get in. There is just a lot of competition, so there is a certain element of luck involved. |
Yes, it cannot hurt. DD toured the campus in person another time after a guided tour. Signed up for multiple online panels, especially in areas of interest. There might always be one new snipped of info that was not shared in the other version/tour. |
| It also depends how many they take early. I think Tulane takes so many early that for the RD round admission rate is like 1% or something. What matters here is the RD acceptance rates for in and out of state. But certainly sounds like a VERY strong candidate wherever he applies. |
| Not one student with similar stats in past five years on Naviance has been rejected from our large MCPS high school with many applicants. I’d still show interest in case they start yield protecting at that level. |
Huh? |
It is a funny allegory meant to demonstrate the difficulty of applying from Md, I think. I didn’t want to point out those on the train were from any graduating year, grad school, law school etc. I am guessing the 35 is an extrapolated number of enrolled freshmen based on the 66 MD members of last year’s freshmen class. Apples to oranges, but I like hearing about the kids on the train home for the holidays

Multiple points here: 1. How many NOVA kids are attending W&M and contrasting it to how few from MoCo, indicating the OOS state competitiveness 2. Amtrak is an easy connector to travel between the college & NOVA 3. The conductor geeking out on Harry Potter, not a bad comparison in my opinion regarding the train around holidays 4. Poster was humble by not mentioning how the conductor praised the W&M students as the kindest & nicest passengers he's had. Yes, multiple parents verified this on FB as being true and student confirmed. |
