From a good Montgomery County school. And test scores are 1570, with good extra curriculars (I am going to take that to mean a leadership position and long term involvement in some activity).

And the OOS and In-state admit rates are about 10% difference (40% and 30% roughly). Wouldn’t this kid have a decent shot? There are posters who said kids got in with a 1360 SAT and another with a C.

I understand ED would be a surer bet, instate is better, and the kid needs to demonstrate interest, but wouldn’t RD at least be considered a match?

Yes, there is a lot of bad advice here. Very good chance of getting in with these scores, even RD OOS.

+1. Try to have him sign up and attend some of their virtual events. I think they have a virtual tour as well.

Agree, there is nothing wrong with those stats and should have a very good chance. Make sure to tick those other boxes they care about and keep opening emails, attend their online events, if possible do campus tour on your own in addition and nail that essay.

Good Luck!

Kids also came home Friday evening, Sat am, and there were two trains Sunday. And, of course, some kids drove and some were picked up.

Contrast this with 35 kids a year from MoCo.

Huh?

Multiple points here:

1. How many NOVA kids are attending W&M and contrasting it to how few from MoCo, indicating the OOS state competitiveness
2. Amtrak is an easy connector to travel between the college & NOVA
3. The conductor geeking out on Harry Potter, not a bad comparison in my opinion regarding the train around holidays
4. Poster was humble by not mentioning how the conductor praised the W&M students as the kindest & nicest passengers he's had. Yes, multiple parents verified this on FB as being true and student confirmed.

OMG. Excuse me while I hurl. If this is any indication of the types of parents who have kids at WM, hard pass.

I agree. Parents who are proud that their kids and their friends are polite and kind are the worst.

Thanks.

Absolutely! My kid with very similar stats is at W&M now, and we couldn’t be happier. He loves it! Declined many others (tough!) but the school is so right for him.

Parents who brag that their kids and friends (only at a certain school, of course!) are the most polite and nice people ever, actually *are* the worst. Glad we agree.

I wouldn't know, not a Big 3 parent and don't know of any.

You are readings things into my post I did not say, nor think. Nowhere did I claim their 'the most' or 'the only".
Of course there are polite kids at hundreds of other schools too (would be silly to claim differently) , but can't one be happy and share a positive event?

Not everything is a competition in life.

DP, but the Hogworts Express is a feel good NOVA- WM tradition— and it’s one that I looks forward to. It’s unusual to have a large number of kids all coming home to the same station via railroad in 2023– but man does it beat sitting on 95 to Williamsburg and back. There are hundreds of parents waiting eagerly for the train to arrive so they can see their kid. Then hundreds of kids pouring off the train, still talking with friends and roomates they had travelled with. Lots of hugging. Families reunited for the holidays. It a great way to start a break or holiday. And yes, I’m glad that my kid has kind peers— and that the kids represent the school well.

I have to agree it’s hard to see what about this antidote about an informal WM/ NOVA tradition pisses some people off. Of course other schools have kids who are kind and polite. And of course other schools have feel good traditiona, formal and informal. But, this thread is about WM.

Speaking of WM traditions, their Yule Log ceremony is a really nice one. It’s live-streamed on 12/17 here: https://www.wm.edu/sites/yulelog/

Parents whose kids get in ED should watch the livestream with the newest member of the Tribe. It’s a nice way to celebrate their good news. My kid got in ED and tuned in and was so excited that next year, she would participate.

Yule log is the best! What book does President Rowe read these days? President Sullivan read How the Grinch Stole Christmas way back when. .

What a lovely tradition. Wishing everyone peace and joy this December!
