And why does it matter?

Kids get sick. After two years of mandated masks, this year, kids will be sick more often.

MCPS is large. At any given time, lots of MCPS kids will be sick.

Then, clearly masking helps. This is not normal to have this many kids sick at once.

Are you serious? Do you understand how immunity works? Kids need to be exposed to germs to develop their immune systems. If you keep masking, it will only exacerbate the problem. I can't believe how idiotic your thought process is.

This.

Sure, colds and sickness are inconvenient. But they are essential in order for kids to develop robust immune system. Forcing kids to mask (to avoid the usual childhood illnesses) does then a huge disservice in the long term.

Except not all kids develop a robust immune system and some of it is genetics. You also forget the impact when kids bring it home to the parents.

So what? That's no different than before covid. They just have to deal like they always have, and if that means wear a mask, THEY should wear one. My kids are done protecting the few compromised to their disadvantage.

It’s sad what parents like you teach and model to their kids. No wonder they have mental health issues.

The ones with the mental health issues are sadly still masking due to anxiety caused by anxious parents.

Sounds like you don’t understand what anxiety and real mental illness is. Masking is the responsible thing to do. Be thankful you don’t have health issues which is why you don’t get it.

Anxiety is what many otherwise healthy people suffer when they fear catching or passing on a disease that is basically a cold now. Why are we still having this discussion? I feel badly for the kids stuck at home and or wearing masks endlessly. Thank goodness the schools came to their senses about the ridiculous mandates.

Because less kids in school is less learning for classes. Teachers will have to reteach a lot. For example, science teachers have a lot of work to do to teach children that their parents are stupid and wearing masks is not making more kids sick now.
Masks were never mandated and were always removed at lunch time or at breakfast.
The number of students and teachers out sick has always been tracked in MCPS and is always a known data point.

Masks weee most definitely mandated in MCPS. Where do you live?

Never. They were removed every day at indoor lunch. Children breathe at lunch. Virus spreads. No mandate to eat with masks on.

Yes, they didn't mandate the physically impossible, but they were mandated. I have no idea what your goal is in lying about recent history now, but we know you're lying.

We also know that anyone calling other people "stupid" shouldn't also use the phrase "less kids."

DP.

It's not physically impossible to mandate masks indoors. Lunch is eaten outside. Lots of schools did it and continue to do it. That's mandatory masking. It's keeping a mask on indoors at all times when intelligent people know that a pandemic spreads indoors in poorly ventilated rooms.

MCPS lied. They were the ones pretending like they were going to keep children safe when they had absolutely no intention to keep them safe. Wear a mask in the door and take it off inside? That's a farce and that's what happened. That's the truth. If you like believing fantasy, then keep pretending masks were mandatory. LOL.

MCPS is lying again right now and you don't even know it. Gullible MCPS we're #1 parents fall for the MCPS branding over and over again at the expense of their children.

You want MCPS to force kids to wear masks indoors at all times? Now? At this point in the pandemic? Even our high-ranking government officials aren’t advocating for masks on kids.

Why are you so anti-science. There is no good reason to force kids to wear masks indoors.

You are welcome to keep your kid in a mask as long as you choose! Good news, nobody is going to stop you.

How is it anti-science? Can you show us the studies behind that?

Let’s not forget that ZERO kids age 0-17 have died of Covid in Montgomery County since the beginning of this pandemic.

https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/covid19/data/case-counts.html#deaths-age

Why would you want to force kids to mask when kids are not dying from Covid now, and they never were. Feel free to advocate for mask mandates at nursing homes. But not at schools.

Mask mandates for kids are most definitely anti-science.

Kids have died in the us, although rare as have many adults who can contract it through kids however the discussion is not about deaths. So, please show us the studies. You cannot so you hide behind no kids have died.

Strep can cause PANDAS and rheumatic fever heart disease

EBV can cause subsequent lymphoma.

Chicken pox can cause subsequent shingles, or Ramsay Hunt (Justin Bieber)

Kids die from flu and RSV.

Covid is not the only virus with long-term health consequences or mortality in children. But kids didn't mask for strep, EBV, chicken pox, flu, or RSV.

More reasons to advocate for masking. Good job.

Masks are disgusting. They are full of gross snot and germs and people still keep them on their faces. I just want to throw when I see you in your mask.

Knock it off, you two. Honestly, do we need to take away your recess?

Look, there are points to be made for masks and for relief from them, but there's no need to accuse someone else of mental health issues!

I have a high schooler who mostly masks (indoors in close proximity) and would like to see more masking when serious illnesses surge. I also sympathize with parents of elementary kids for whom masking interferes with communication, and who (kids, not parents) aren't as able to decide when conditions suggest masking or when it's pretty safe not to mask. But, masks are effective for covid, especially if those with infected are wearing them. I think for other viruses and flu, surfaces are important too. It's a tricky time with immune systems unprepared for all sorts of viruses. And the issues of others at home is real. I am someone who has immune issues and very glad not to have had covid. I don't think it's too much to ask kids with symptoms to mask or for all to mask (or at least encourage it) for brief periods if a new variant surges.

Can we just try to have compassion for one another?

Wow. All doctors and nurses have mental health issues. What terrible professions. No one should become a doctor or a nurse it immediately gives them mental health issues.
Just today watched a doctor take one of your brats outside to test for RSV so the kid wouldn't remove his mask indoors around other patients.

So, you simply don't get that not everyone is "healthy" and that cold for some is a big deal even when healthy? Why are you having the discussion when you don't care and it's not a big deal? Kids are stuck at home because of the lack of precautions. If you truly care about those kids, what are you going to do to make it safe for them to return?

That is the real issue. Some have zero compassion and would prefer to hid via bullying than do the right thing.

I wish I got recess.

Most of the teens masking now are doing so because of low self esteem or to cover acne. I know this as fact.
