What subject is it in? For Blair SMAC they don’t even see non STEM subjects. If it’s in math, for example, yes, uncompetitive.

DP. How about Computer Science? Or do they only see Math & Science?

Reading. So it’s matter when applying for IB? Sigh

No. No Teacher Recommendations, no Map-R (for SMCSM). Just 7th grades and Q1 8th grades + Map-M + essays/statements. That's it.

What I didn't understand from last night's meeting is whether or not they know if kids went to the TPMS magnet. Transcripts clearly list that the 7th grade math class was "Mag Algebra I" which is only available at TPMS. It also indicates the math class was different (2x speed + more content). Is that scrubbed to eliminate the "Mag" - I think that would be disingenuous and unfair, only because the class is materially different. The answers were unclear.

just checked 2018/2019 of TPMS math on DC's transcript. Algebra 1A and Algebra 1B

Oh I see that too. Weird though because this year is Mag Geometry.

Last year was magnet algebra too, but it isn’t listed that way once completed, it seems.

It's odd that they redact Math but not Sci or CompSci then: those show up as Mag on the report cards. Anyway assuming they see the whole report card, it will be obvious purely because Mag kids have 8 classes and all other kids have 7.

Some schools have 8 classes, not 7 outside magnet schools. Others have 7. However, not all schools offer computer Science classes, which is unfair to those who aren't offered it.

From the application, the only requirement is Algebra which is a pretty low bar given some of our kids are doing Algebra 2 in 8th.

I think they will know. It makes sense because a B in that class is very different than a B in regular Algebra.

If you get twice the class time in Algebra, if you have a B over an A in a regular class, and a child takes Algebra in 6th vs. 7th, it really isn't that impressive. Its the same class, just more teaching time is given.

I believe Algebra 1 is non weighted course (it does not have honor level) For MCPS transcript, Magnet, Honor and AP are all weighted classes -- Some high school courses are not weighted like Spanish 1 and 2

That wasn’t clear to me as only TPMS kids will have computer science grades. You could email the magnet coordinator.

But our kids took magnet algebra and the transcript just says “algebra”. I’m not following how this weighted issue applies.

your kids (as well as mine) took magnet algebra 1 in a magnet middle school program. but it has to be conformed into MCPS transcript format. You may see magnet geometry because this cause as well as algebra ii are two levels (weighted such as honor, magnet and non-weighted)

I can’t follow what you are saying here.

On the transcript there is a designation for Honors or Magnet. I don't remember if it's an X or a checkmark.

There must be many hundreds of kids of both genders with As in math and science and 99th percentile MAP. How do they differentiate? Did not attend the open house but the information being shared here is confusing.

Simply put Algebra I is not weighted not like geometry which is weighted -- Hon/Mag weighted 5

You mean for the high school transcript for college? This has nothing to do with magnet admissions

I am trying to explain to some parents why their kids's magnet algebra I in at magnet middle schools become algebra I on transcript ---
